Default Apple Acquires Topsy for an Estimated $200 Million

Apple has just confirmed its acquisition of social-media analytics firm Topsy Labs, Inc.

The deal is purportedly worth at least $200 million, sources tell the Wall Street Journal, which describes Topsy as a specialist in data from Twitter, offering tools to analyze tweets and other information to help track consumer sentiment.

Its tools can decipher how often a specific term is tweeted, find an influential person on a specific subject, or measure the exposure of an event or campaign.
Although a rep for Apple confirms the acquisition, no details were provided with regard to how Apple plans to use the company and its many resources and talented team members. Speculation, however, is that Topsy's technology may be used in partnership with Apple's iTunes Radio to accelerate its ad revenue potential.

I think they could have hired people to do this for a lot less than that amount.

I'm sure the company was acquired for its assets, which include not only the employees but patents rights etc

200 million for a company that only exists to analyze data from another provider. I can only hope Apple knows what it's doing. As mentioned earlier there are cheaper ways to acquire both talents and relevant patents.
They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Well. Sometimes in business. It's easier to acquire the competition, especially if they know what they are doing , then attempting to build or create a competitive campaign. Sure it cost more. But now they cut the odds of
Losing in half Smart move if you ask me. Might have cost more, but its guaranteed to fill their needs.
