Amazon's Set-Top Box Said to be Delayed Until 2014
It’s been rumored that Amazon is said to be working on a competitor to the Apple TV with its own set-top box but recent buzz points toward the device eyeing a spring 2014 launch. Though Amazon was originally thought to have been preparing the device to launch this year, ahead of Christmas, according to AllThingsD, it has seen several internal delays and is now expected to launch in the first half of next year instead.
Peter Kafka mentioned that he heard a few “theories” about why the device won’t be coming out this year, including allegations that Amazon wasn’t happy with its current performance and that the management at the company is “underwhelmed” with the product’s ability to stand out with its current options. Word of the rumored device, which is said to be code-named “Cinnamon,” first leaked earlier this month. It’s said that the set-top box has been in development since at least April of this year.
Much like the Apple TV, Amazon’s device is rumored to perform the typical tasks such as streaming movies, TV shows and music. In addition to that, it was said that Amazon is in negotiations with cable companies and other content providers to build apps for the device. Details on Amazon’s interest in the living room come shortly after rumors of Apple working on its own hardware refresh of the Apple TV. The last time Apple updated its living room hardware was March of 2012, though a number of subsequent software updates have added new features and channels.
We’ll have to see what comes of the whole project. Is an Amazon set-top box something you would consider buying?
