Default Apple Designer Jony Ive's (RED) Desk Revealed in New Pictures

Images of the custom aluminum desk co-designed by Apple’s Jony Ive for Bono’s Product (RED) charity auction surface, showing Ive’s minimalist aesthetic carries through even in furniture design. The new images of the one-of-a-kind (RED) Desk show that is machined from solid aluminum. The piece was fabricated by Neal Fay Studio, a renowned group of aluminum specialists. Ive designed it along with collaborator Marc Newson, with whom he also designed the one-of-a-kind Leica camera.

In a break from the smooth facades that typify other Ive creations, the (RED) Desk features a mosaic pattern on its surface, with a pattern of angular segments of different shades breaking up the otherwise clinical look of the piece. There is also a bit of text on the desk that signifies its uniqueness, reading “Designed by Jony Ive & Marc Newson for (RED) 2013 edition 01/01.”

The (RED) Desk is set to go on auction at Sotheby’s in New York on November 23 alongside the Leica and a set of gold EarPods. In a recent interview, Ive said he expects that the Leica will fetch roughly $6 million at auction. A customized grand piano and a 2012 Range Rover are also said to go on auction, both bearing Ive and Newson’s touch.

Must be nice to have that kind of $$$ to blow on awesome products, even though the cause it's supporting is futile.

Looks kinda like a desk from a Star Trek set.

I like the minimalist design, but it would be even better if there were something functional, like near-seamless compartments on the desktop that hold USB ports or even a compartment to dock your laptop and hide it away when using it with desktop keyboard/mouse.

I wonder if it was made from one solid block of aluminum. The article states its solid aluminum but doesn't say if its all one piece

"In new pictures" I only see one picture. And it doesn't look red.

After reading all the Snarky, Envy driven hate filled comments on this Desk, I realized not one of these people get what this Desk represents! The Desk was created for Product (RED), an AIDS Fundraising project. So, no, it does not have to be RED! Jonathan Ive is an Industrial Designer, thus the Table is made from the most prevalent material in Computer Industrial Design today, Aluminum! Thus being an industrial designer the desk is going to refect the clinical coldness of both the Hospiatls that AIDS Patients must ever haunt for their continued survival and the Industrial workbenches upon which Jony Ive and his Ilk hammer out some of their finest creations. Finally the Visual interplay of the Jigsaw pattern on the surface of the Desk creates the illusion of a Bland existence when you view the desk from a distance and only up-close can one truly appreciate the playful Jigsaw Design! It's so sad that some people are so wrapped up in the smugness of their ownership of one device Brand or another that they can't see the selfless charity that Mark Newson and Jonathan Ive have given to the Cause of Helping people living with AIDS!

IVE is a joke. Tired designs following a few successes. He is so arrogant he believes the hype.

How dare you criticize Jony Ivie's design!

    This is perfect Applesque!

We don't need no stinkin' compartments!

Next thing you'll want is a way to hide the cables!

    What were you thinking?
