Apple's Spaceship Campus Inches Closer to Reality
The spaceship has (almost) landed.
Late Wednesday in Cupertino, California - the homestead of Apple's iconic global headquarters - the city's planning commission officially approved the tech giant's plans for a new headquarters first unveiled just over two years ago by late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs.
In June 2011, Jobs appeared before the City Council to pitch the expansive new digs, which will relocate thousands of the company's employees and unite much of the entire West Coast Apple family beneath one centralized - and circular - roof.
Although the formal approval on Wednesday comes as no surprise, the decision is no less critically important for the company's ambitious construction effort, which has now been cleared by all power-players and decision makers in local government.
Wednesday's green light means the ball is now back in the Cupertino City Council's court. The council will vote on the recommendation on Tuesday, October 15.
The estimated budget for the new building is placed at somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 billion... or, you know, how much Apple made since you started reading this article.

Gotta feeling this is going to be an expensive boondoggle, and 20 years from now an enormous white elephant.
