Default Apple Set to Launch an Internal Overhaul for Apple TV Software on September 18

Apple is set to release the next update for the Apple TV next week alongside the release of iOS 7 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with new software that is said to enhance AirPlay capabilities. Details on the upcoming update were revealed by AllThingsD, citing people familiar with Apple’s plans.

Although Apple isn’t planning on updating the Apple TV hardware, the company is set to launch an “internal overhaul” that will “tweak” the current AirPlay feature, which allows users to stream content from their iOS device or Mac to the set-top box. After the update, users will reportedly be able to stream purchased content from their iTunes Store to another person’s Apple TV, even if it isn’t set up with their Apple ID and password. The media will be streaming directly from the cloud rather than requiring a local device.

This tweak will give the Apple TV an ability which was offered by Google’s recently released Chromecast, a $35 media streaming dongle which launched this summer.

Details on the software updates that are headed for the Apple TV were originally revealed last week, suggesting that the latest version will gain additional channels, content and functionality. The Cupertino California company has been gradually adding new channels to the device in recent months with the latest push supplying content from Vevo, Disney, the Weather Channel, and the Smithsonian Channel. Prior to that, Apple added HBO Go, WatchESPN, Sky News, CrunchyRoll, and Qello.

Are any of you Apple TV owners excited about the upcoming update?

This sounds good, but I still wish I could jailbreak my gen 3 Apple TV. I'd like to run XBMC on it.

That's cool. So if I'm at my buddies house and have my phone, I can stream movies on his Apple TV with my account. Digging that!

I don't really care for games too much but I agree it should handle games... However, Apps on Apple TV = ahhhhhhh yeahhhhhhh! AirPlay mirroring works really well with a jailbroken iPad mini and a good HDTV... I was blown away while scrolling thru infinidock on how clean, clear and smooth the animation was... Color keyboard poppin up on the tv looked super tight... Using safari was dope too... That feature is what help makes up for the lack of local apps and games... Loving my Apple TV/ Airport Express/ iPad mini / iPhone / Remote App / Home Sharing integration... I live on Hawaii in a small jungle shack thats simple and basic living... From the outside and inside it looks low tech... Crystals, candles, incense, plenty of ganja and related devices, bamboo stuff galore... It looks hella hippy... And then, BOOOOM!!! I trip people out by using my wemo app to turn on all my lights BOOOOM!!! I trip em out by controlling my TV thru Apple TV from my iPhone... Going from listening to purchased iTunes music to watching YouTube, to Netflix all from any idevice from outside... I have no TV stations either... So yeah, I like my Apple TV and welcome good changes...

Make it so you can bluetooth data. No WiFi needed. I'd buy a true stand alone streaming unit. Until then why bother?
