Default Microsoft Reportedly Shifting Smart Watch Prototype Testing to its Surface Team

As reports continue to speculate Apple’s move to gear up to launch a so-called “iWatch” another recent rumor is claiming that Microsoft is working on releasing a similar product with their brand name. The Apple rival is supposedly late enough in the development stage of its own smart watch that testing of said device has been moved over to the company’s Surface hardware development team. As of right now, Microsoft’s Surface tablet team is now prototyping device hardware featuring Oxynitride Aluminum, or “transparent aluminum” that is three times harder than glass, according to a report from The Verge. Microsoft is requesting 1.5-inch displays from component manufacturers as it moves closer to releasing a wrist-worn accessory.

Before testing was handed over to the Surface team, Microsoft was said to be experimenting with smart watch concepts through the company’s Xbox accessories team according to the repot. The hardware purportedly runs a modified version of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. A key component of Microsoft’s alleged smart watch is the concept of removable bands in a variety of different colors. Early hardware for the prototype suggests the band colors include blue, yellow, black, white and grey.

The prototype hardware is said to include specs such as 6 GBs of internal storage and even integrated LTE support for high-speed data connectivity on the go. Said features would be a large jump from existing smart watches such as the Pebble or MetaWatch, both of which rely on Bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone for data. As of right now, there seems to be a lot of competition brewing between the tech giants over the smart watch space, we’ll have to see how this evolves with time by being patient.

Apple has a good way of taking "new" product ideas that just didn't do too well and perfecting them into something people actually want. I have a feeling the iWatch story will run along these same lines...

How were iPhone and iPad "first?!" Smartphones and tablets existed. Hell, Microsoft had attempted tablets three times by that point (Smart Display, Tablet Edition, and an unreleased project). Microsoft made a "smart watch" back in the '90s too.
