Default Judge Finds Apple GUILTY of Conspiring to Raise eBook Prices

The verdict is in.... and Apple is guilty.

This morning, a federal judge ruled that the Cupertino, California-based tech behemoth did, indeed, conspire with five major publishers in order to raise the retail prices of e-books.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan found "compelling evidence" that Apple violated federal antitrust law by playing a "central role" in a conspiracy with the publishers to eliminate retail price competition and raise e-book prices.
According to Reuters, the decision could expose Apple to "substantial damages."

All told, Apple's loss is a victory for the U.S. Department of Justice and the 33 U.S. states and territories that brought the civil antitrust case against the Mac maker.

"Apple chose to join forces with the publisher defendants to raise e-book prices and equipped them with the means to do so," Cote said in a 159-page decision. "Without Apple's orchestration of this conspiracy, it would not have succeeded as it did."

"This result is a victory for millions of consumers who choose to read books electronically," Bill Baer, head of the Justice Department's antitrust division, subsequently stated. "This decision by the court is a critical step in undoing the harm caused by Apple's illegal actions."

Apple, we're told, plans to appeal.

Everyone knows Apple is guilty even Apple knows it is guilty, appealing is just wasting time and money of people who pays taxes (another jab at Apple).

Yep, saw this coming from eight miles away. They obviously price-fixed.

Now Apple has to be taken to task for price-fixing the apps on the App Store.

Yeah that's true, they haven't done as much innovation throughout these past years. Apple needs to kick things up, we all know apple can make some great innovations

American company that keeps money off shore and pays 2% tax.
American company that sends work to China to have everything made.
American company that stops innovation by lawsuit, square shape with rounded corners? Really?

In this particular case not at all, Apple's price fixing actually makes U.S. government more money.
And yes it is good for us because consumer do not have to pay hardcover book prices on something that is digitally transmitted with very little in cost compare to actual books. I've seen price for digital books cost less before Apple and significantly higher after Apple's price fixing.
As to people who says publishers being strong armed into lower their price by Amazon, guess what? If you don't like it you can stop selling their books on Amazon!! Only sell your books on Apple and bookstores!
I've not bought 1 eBook since Apple started selling eBooks, and I will not buy another eBook until I see the eBooks I like prices is significantly lower than print.

Yeah really! We are talking about a shape!!!
Did Apple invent square shape with rounded corners?
No! Because they were on plenty of other phones out there before Apple iPhone, try looking searching for LG Prada that came before iPhone.
Here is picture of inadmissable evidence because "it was submitted too late" during the original court hearing.
