Default Google Drive Free Storage Tripled to 15 GB For All Users

Shortly after Amazon was found trying to compete with Apple and other cloud services by offering 5 GB of free storage space, it seems like Google has decided to step it up a notch. Google recently announced that the free storage space that spans several Google services such as Gmail, Google+ and Google Drive is now being tripled to a whopping 15 GB for all customers.

The changes are said to be rolling out over the next few weeks to all Google customers. The space is shared so if you are using Google Drive, that 15 GB is shared with any of your other Google services that require storage. As many of you may already know, 15 GB is quite the competitive number in today’s age as Apple and Amazon only provide 5 GB with iCloud and Amazon Cloud Drive respectively, with Dropbox offering a measly 2 GB. There is another service that offers 10 GB of free storage, MediaFire, but their free tier includes ads. All services allow you to get more storage for an additional fee as usual. What will be interesting to see here though is how companies such as Apple will respond to Google’s challenge – will they try match? Or stand firm?

This move unifies Google storage system, a concept similar to that of Apple with its iCloud service, although at this point Apple doesn’t count image storage in Photo Stream against your 5 GB. It still pales in comparison though in the eyes of many. For those of you who are seeking to take advantage of the news or at the very least considering trying Google as an option given the fact they will be providing more storage space can use the free iOS app so to access your storage space or use the web browser on any computer.

That is AWESOME! Just as I was reaching my 5 GB limit too and considering upgrading... Thanks Google!

I'm in, why wouldn't you take advantage of this offer? As far as I can tell, there are no strings attached as one might think. Great deal.

How long before I can get 500 gb free? I'd love a good cloud storage option for pics.
15gb is awesome though. I hope apple follows suit cuz I can't even backup my camera rolls from my idevices without going over my 5gb.

But you get up to 3GB free just by auto uploading pics/vids. Dropbox is still the best cloud storage IMO. It's the most feature-rich. And with all the promotions they've done over the past few years, I've gotten just over 10GB (permanent) right now and an extra 3GB that will expire soon. All for free.

Still only 5 GB in the UK!

Only trouble with Dropbox is that the next level after the freebie is 100GB and it cost a fortune. Now if they had some intermediate tariffs then they may be the best, but until then....

Been using DropBox for years. I've accumulated 8GB through referrals and what not. I love that it backs up your camera roll automatically.

Didn't Dropbox just get hacked like 6 months ago? I wouldn't trust their security.

I do, I said it a few posts up, it is 50 gb plus it encrypts your files locally, mega doesn't even have the decryption keys and you choose who can get them, I love it.

What should be the only news coming from this is the fact Skydrive initially gave everyone 20 gigabytes. Then they pulled the rug from beneath their user base by cutting the storage space by 15 gigs. No warning no nothing. Glad to hear skydrive is still free cause I'll never give them my business
