Default Consumer Reports Gives High Marks to Apple's PC Tech Support

On Monday, Consumer Reports crowned Apple king when it comes to PC tech support. According to the venerable publication, Apple not only topped its score last year, it "walloped" other brand-name computer manufacturers.

Apple's position was voted on by the readers who participated in the publication's yearly reader survey.
Among the criteria that was considered when assessing successful online and phone support were: ease of contacting staff, clarity of advice, technical knowledge, patience, and time for follow-up.

Apple's in-house technical support service, the Genius Bar, rated as high as support provided by phone or online.
The only tech companies that came close to the level of consumer support satisfaction experienced with Apple were independent shops that make custom computers. Interestingly enough, the strength of Apple's tech support helped to draw attention to competitors with "room for improvement" in this category.

"24 to 40 percent of respondents who sought phone or online help from makers of Windows-based computers said the staff's patience, knowledge, or clarity was fair at best," the report concludes.
