iMac Production Problems Rumored to be Solved

According to a new report from the China Times, Apple’s component suppliers have solved the production problems that were keeping stocks of the company’s new iMac models low. This should in turn help Apple see strong sales of its signature desktop in the next quarter. Based on the report, orders are expected to remain strong throughout the first quarter of 2013, as orders for new products typically peak within the first four months after their launch.
Overall, the info the report provides seems to be countering recent trends, where we have seen delivery times for the 21.5 inch iMac slipping to 2-3 weeks. The buzz in the air was suggesting that the iMac was still facing production problems, something completely opposite of the new report’s findings. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, recently noted during the company’s quarterly conference call that, while Apple was confident it could significantly increase supply, “demand here is very strong and we are not certain that we will achieve a supply-demand balance during the quarter.”
Cook continued by citing that iMac supply constraints were a major reason for the significant drop in Mac sales for the past quarter. Other Mac devices, which were largely in line with analyst projections and the iMac, along with the shorter quarter and other inventory constraints, largely made up for the shortfall in Mac sales compared to previous quarters.
We’ll be keeping an eye on the iMac availability to see if the report turns out to be true. If it does, the shipping estimates should improve as a result.
