iTunes Turns Twelve Years Old Today
Just two days ago, Apple’s native Web browser for Mac OS X, Safari, turned ten years old. Today, another iconic piece of software by Apple celebrates its birthday. iTunes, Apple’s very own solution to answering our digital media needs for our Macs, PCs, and iOS devices, celebrates its 12th birthday this Wednesday.
Whether or not you’re a fan of iTunes, it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, as Apple has made it the main bridge between our computers and mobile devices. Apple just released iTunes 11 in November of 2012.
iTunes launched for the first time ever on January 9th, 2001. Since then, it has become the standard piece of software for synchronizing data between our personal computers and iPods, iPhones, or iPads. It is also comes pre-installed as the default media player for Mac computers. Windows users can download a version of iTunes too.
The iTunes store has grown a lot over the years, becoming not only a music store, but also a place to download movies, ringtones, apps, books, podcasts, and many other kinds of digital content. Our mobile iOS devices also come with their own iTunes store application, which has been optimized to take advantage of the smaller display.
Happy 12th Birthday iTunes!
