Default Apple and HTC Settle All Patent Disputes, Agree to Ten Year Licensing Deal

Apple recently announced that the company has reached a global settlement with HTC. The settlement includes the dismissal of all ongoing court litigation and will participate in a ten-year license agreement that covers current and future patents held by both companies. The details of the settlement remain scarce though.

The Cupertino California company did issue a statement on its website announcing the termination of all current patent disputes with HTC. The ten-year agreement is positioned as such to be used as protection against any future suits.

For those of you who didn’t already know, Apple and HTC have been going at it over a number of claimed patents, including a complaint that the Taiwanese handset manufacturer lodged in Delaware that sought out to ban the U.S. sale of the iPhones, iPads, and certain Mac computers over violation of claimed Wi-Fi patents. The people in charge of both companies issued similar statements with Tim Cook saying “We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC. We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation” and Peter Chou saying "HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation.”

The agreement between the two comes as a surprise after previous court-ordered talks to urge the companies toward reaching a settlement failed. Although the terms of the Apple and HTC agreement remain confidential, both companies likely came to an agreement after each of them saw the benefit in doing so. Now if only Apple and the handful of other companies it has ongoing issues with can come to a similar conclusion (ahem, Samsung).

Apple decided to settle patent issues with HTC cuz HTC doesn't prove as a stronger competition to apple

Apple is losing one lawsuit after another, courts see so many litigation filed by Apple it is getting harder to take them seriously. HTC is a small fish but they also do hold quite a bit of patents that Apple need, and HTC needs some of Apple's patents. This is a trade that is beneficial to both companies. Plus HTC would be able to take some of Samsung business because they are both Android machines, the enemy of my enemy is my friend applies I guess. Apple can now concentrate on the big fish, Samsung, as a double whammy.

Quick fact check: HTC lost serious litigation in the US. After having many of their products banned in one country after another, HTC came to apple with a deal involving current and FUTURE patents. Apple, understanding there is more money in licensing to an existing company than in litigation to finish killing a company, agreed to HTCs proposal. It's a win-win, but you bet HTC made some serious sacrifices to get there.

And let's remember apple hold a lot of patents that htc need as well so this not a case of either giving up but more a smart move on both sides as they will have 2 way deal

Both companies own a lot of patents. This is a good thing for the consumer. I for one am glad they came to a agreement. I hope this is the start of more agreements between companies.
