Jailbreak for Apple TV 3 Confirmed to be in the Works

After the news from iOS hacker pod2g, where he exaggerated the situation of not knowing of anyone working on a jailbreak for the Apple TV 3, the older Apple TV 2 price has spiked to as much as $230 on Amazon and eBay. Customers who crave to add more features to their set-top box seem to be willing to pay a significant premium to jailbreak their Apple TV and add different media types, a web browser, and the ability to back up content to the cloud. This isn’t much of a surprise granted that jailbroken iOS devices seem to be worth more than ones that aren’t because you can add so much more value to the device as it opens up more features and options for users.
Those who were hoping to jailbreak their Apple TV 3 were left quite disappointed but it should be mentioned that there is light at the end of the tunnel. According to 9to5Mac, who claims to have learned some inside knowledge through someone close to the project, there is in fact a jailbreak for the third-generation Apple TV in the works. There seems to be a handful of people still working on a jailbreak for the device and while it isn’t complete, there is at least one method to jailbreaking which is currently being worked on in hopes of successful results. James Abeler of the FireCore team confirmed the news by stating the following:
Furthermore, Abeler mentioned that FireCore (the company behind Seas0nPass, aTV Flash, and MiRow) is ready to release updates for its software when the new jailbreak becomes available. Many users who previously used stock firmware moved to jailbreak their Apple TVs because of the new and interesting functionality that is available to hacked devices and the trend will only seem to continue at this rate. As for the Apple TV 3, until the jailbreak is released, the price of the Apple TV 2 will likely remain higher. It is pretty crazy how consumers are willing to pay almost three times the price of the older model of the Apple TV for premium features but at the end it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. There wasn’t any mention of a time frame but at least we know the jailbreak is in fact being worked on.There is a group of very bright and talented individuals working on a lead that could result in a usable jailbreak for the 3rd gen Apple TV. While there is no telling how long this process could take, we remain optimistic that a jailbreak for this device will be available in the future. For the record, no one at FireCore is involved in the jailbreak discovery process.

On eBay I've been watching a few ATV2 and they have sold from $150AUD to $190AUD in the last few days. The ATV3 is $120AUD new at the shops.
This is great news. Looks like there is hope so I wont be selling my ATV3. Just a few more weeks/months to wait.

WOW, you read an article(9to5) about the "prices of the ATv on eBay/Amazon," and then you wrote a report from a part of their story that wasn't even backed up by proof, just some unnamed source, and backed up by a gentlemen that works for Firecore, a company that has nothing to do with actually providing help with finding Jb's, and put it up as news. Then, you pretty much plagiarized them by also saying pod2g exaggerated the situation. This is HORRIBLE REPORTING and writing.
And BTW…….. I would believe what pod2g says over anything that "some unnamed source," 9 to 5," "Firecore," and ESPECIALLY "Mmi" says when it comes to a JB!

WTF.. last week you posted how we should sell are 3rd gen apple tv fors 2nd gen and that they are worth more then the 3rd gen.. and what no one is working on a JB.. Like.. IDC. How about instead of pushing out as many ****** little news stories that were taken from a different site, and write a few really good ones with proper information and research. 10mins search google doesnt count as research.

Just sold my ATV2 for $175 and bought a new ATV3. I don't jb my ATV so awesome $70 profit for me. But I do wonder if a jb for ATV3 will come out. Might give jb a go again if it does, if not I won't be upset. As long as I have my airplay.

Thanks for the notice, Time to sell my ATV2 and get the ATV3 for a profit. I'll just play/stream videos via my iPhone app mirrored to the new ATV 3 for now until jailbreak comes out. (Stream to Me, Air Video, or Remote Potato) It would be lame if I passed up a free plus PAID ATV upgrade!
For the person that said they are selling their ATV2 for a new ROKU, the ATV3 vs ROKU reviews on amazon are interesting.

Are you really ready to give up Mirroring?Last edited by JazJon; 08-15-2012 at 06:19 AM.
