Default Apple Making Online Store Retina Ready

With a plethora of Retina display devices from Apple now floating around the planet - devices that often visit the online Apple store in order to purchase more Apple devices - the marketing folks in Cupertino are planning to spruce up Apple's digital storefront.

The overhaul will apparently come with one main goal in mind: replace all images on the site with Retina-quality images, thereby amplifying the user experience for shoppers browsing on their Retina-display gadgets. Some images have already been updated, but most have not. In other words, the process is currently underway.

According to most industry analysts who have weighed in on the matter, Apple is expected to keep Retina display for its various devices while expanding the technology's reach into other Apple products. As of this writing, Retina display can be found on the new iPad, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, fourth-gen iPod touch, and - most recently - the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The rumor mill is presently buzzing with talk of a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display turning up this fall.

I am still astonished that Apple does not have a mobile site for the iPhone. Of all companies, you'd think they would be first on the list.

There's the apple store app for that.

The Retina Display is fantastic. It's sharp, bright, and super-crisp. It needs to come in larger sizes, though. Can you imagine a 25" screen with 300+ pixels per inch? It would be glorious.

You don't need 300+ PPI for a 25" screen if you are viewing from a normal distance. "Retina display" simply refers to your inability to see the individual pixels of the display after a minimum distance (by Apple's definition of course).

Because there's more to it then just putting up new graphics on a website. It has to correctly detect you are using a "retina display" device. Otherwise, all the graphics will be huge on non-retina screens. Besides, the Apple website isn't very 3.5" friendly anyway. But with the new iPad and the new mac books, it's finally time to step it up.
