Default Java Malware Takes Aim at OS X, Windows, Linux

According to freshly uncovered information presented this week by security firm F-Secure, there's a new cross-platform malware threat that hopefully won't make its way to your machine.

The malware in question was designed with the intention of bestowing remote computer access to hackers. Based on information contained in the report, computers running OS X, Windows, and Linux are potentially vulnerable to the malware.

"All three files for the three different platforms behave the same way," the report reads. "They all connect to 186.87.69.249 to get additional code to execute. The ports are 8080, 8081, and 8082 for OSX, Linux, and Windows respectively."

Not surprisingly, this new malware could potentially reach a very large number of computer users given its multi-platform threat. Gone are the days when Windows PCs were chiefly the lone targets of similar attacks. OS X is now squarely on the radar of hackers and other nefarious digital predators.

Writing for the Naked Security Blog at Sophos, Graham Cluley says that the impact of this malware could, indeed, be far-reaching. "Once it has found out which operating system you are running," he said, "the Java class file will download the appropriate flavor of malware, with the intention of opening a backdoor that will give hackers remote access to your computer... Although the amount of malware written for different operating systems can vary, it's becoming increasingly hard to argue on any OS that it's safe to surf the web without anti-virus protection."

Quite simply, this is why one should never allow an unsolicited Java Applet to run, especially ones that are unsigned or from an unknown publisher.

This is the main reason why I don't have Java installed.

:/ This sucks. I liked not having an anti-virus on my Mac, guess I'll have to go buy one if this gets worse.

Quite the truth. Windows will probably always dominate the general users though, I'm hoping this alone will keep OS X out of major harm's way lol. A little bit of spyware/malware I can deal with removing, just hate the big ol' trojans that I've had before on Windows.

Good. They deserve it for all those years of saying they were malware free. Windows all the way!

Why does that matter? Lol. Mac users aren't solely depending on being malware/virus-free for choosing an operating system. It's a benefit to be a smaller target for malware but that wouldn't make Windows superior in the aspect of personal preference.

    Wow, some people...........

You've just got to be smart about what your installing/downloading. I don't wish viruses or malware on any computer system, they can be a real pain sometime.

So why are you on an Apple iDevice forum again? And why do you wish harm on a company for speaking the truth for all these years? Seems like sour grapes for you eh? Enjoy your windows OS.

lol. You fail. I devices are different from macs. Not to mention windows 8 is the same in "malware free" programming as apple claims to be.

Being attacked and getting a virus from a malicious site are two different things. Everyone in essence SHOULD have anti-virus of some kind on their Mac's. Its not about desire its about need. With all of the attacks that are being made public, it won't be long before a hacker writes a substantial malicious code to affect great numbers. All that do not have it at that time will cry and complain about how Apple has failed them. Apple never said you did not need anti-virus, they have just never really been a big target for it due to the small amount of users VS Windows platform. Now that we know, the next MMi article should outline anti-virus options for Mac users instead of trying to scare us :]

Hey, thanks for the name calling (I see someone edited it for you). You don't need to tell me what types of products are built by Apple... I am an user of Apple products since 1982. And maybe you should look at the name of this forum... ModMyi. See the "i"? That stands for iDevice. If you were here long enough you would know the forum used to be called ModMyiPhone till Apple got their shorts in a bunch. The day Windows is virus/malware free I will be first in line to buy it. Haha! As you can tell I have no plans on using Windows. Stop being so jealous of Mac users. So about that fail... go check your mirror.

ERROR! ERROR! Improper grammar in sector "I am an user of Apple products since 1982", proper grammar would be "I have been a user of Apple products since 1982" OR "I am a user of Apple products since 1982" (Second option still improper but better).

LOL j/k and BTW I'm a gamer so I returned my iMac after realizing I had to pay out the ***** to run all the good PC games because "exe is an unsupported format" (even though ALL the good programs and games run primarily on Windows is irrelevant to you I suppose, but you're entitled to your 'tard opinion as is everyone else)

EDIT: You suck ModMyi, I did my own censoring and you over ruled me.

Surprise, surprise... more name calling. I find it interesting most of the rude people here are jealous Windows users on an Apple products based forum. Trolls gonna troll.
And my gaming is done on consoles & iDevices not my Mac. I use my Mac for computing and design. Also in case you didn't know, you can run Windows on a Mac, but why would you want to?

Get over yourself. Macs are mainly used for crappy audio editing and photo editing. If I want to work on my video game levels to start up my company I need a windows to even get close to starting one. Not to mention I'm on windows 8 and have never had a single problem with malware since day one in January. And I'm completely fine with iDevices but macs are completely different and not labeled as iDevices, just apple products. Get your facts straight. I've been using apple iDevices for only about 4-5 years as I know that difference. Not to mention all of your spelling and grammatical errors pointed out by the other guy so you have no real room to talk dude.

You cannot sit here and compare mobile OS to complete Operating Systems.. Completely different, even though features overlap.

You must have been the victim of porn viruses too many times
