Default What Do Wintek's Woes Tell Us About Apple's Next-Gen iPhone?

On Tuesday, shares of AAPL popped back above $600 for the first time in more than two months.

Topeka Capital Markets’ Brian White took this opportunity to reiterate his Buy rating on the stock with a $1,111 price target for the stock. All this comes after some clarity with regard to the reason for Wintek's sudden sales drop.

Taiwan’s Wintek is one of Apple’s manufacturing partners. Earlier today, the company reported a shocking 34% sales plunge. Initially, fears mounted that this could covertly reflect decreased sales for Apple during the most recent quarter. But instead, a different explanation is likely - and one that speaks to the next-gen iPhone.

"In the past," White told investors Wednesday, "we estimate Wintek generated over 50% of total sales from Apple as an important touch panel supplier in products such as the iPhone and iPad; however, we believe the company may be losing market share in next generation products."

"For example," he continues, "Digitimes has previously indicated that the next generation iPhone could use in-cell touch panels from Sharp and Toshiba at the expense of Wintek and TPK Holdings. At the same time, the Chinese character website Apple Daily recently indicated that Apple may launch an upgraded 9.7-inch iPad in September that features IGZO panels from Sharp that is expected to result in a thinner form factor, longer battery life and what we believe could be an improved viewing experience. Finally, we have highlighted our expectation that an iPad Mini could launch in September. Clearly, Apple has many next generation products on the horizon and the Company may be adjusting its suppliers."

Apple Daily is as trustworthy as a monkey on a computer. They are pumping out Apple rumors to get hits on their pages.
