Default Apple Pledges 100% Renewable Energy Use at N.C. Data Center

It's a bold pledge from Apple, but one that will pacify a number of environmental activist groups targeting Apple of late over the company's purported irresponsible use of energies that aren't as "clean" as some alternative choices.

Apple, however, said today that it now plans to power its main U.S. data center completely from renewable energy. This reality will come not in ten years from now or even five. Apple, incredibly, will achieve this outcome before the end of this year.

The iDevice maker confirmed to Reuters that it is buying equipment from SunPower Corp and startup Bloom Energy "to build two solar array installations in and around Maiden, North Carolina, near its core data center."

"I'm not aware of any other company producing energy onsite at this scale," says Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer. "The plan we are releasing today includes two solar farms and together they will be twice as big as we previously announced, thanks to the purchase of some land very near to the data center in Maiden, which will help us meet this goal."

In recent weeks, groups ranging from Greenpeace to Chinese environmental watchdogs have kept a close and sometimes critical eye trained toward Apple's handling of environmental resources.

Funny that the big bad Greenpeace isn't protesting the Department of Homeland Security's 200 million square feet of office space, none of which is renewable energy powered. Or the NSA's massive data farm in Utah designed to store digital profiles on every American citizen...also not using any renewable energy sources. They're destroying the environment AND the Bill of Rights.

    Protest something that matters.

That's what I thought. Protest non-issues with popular figures for publicity...not the real problems which are boring and might get you in trouble.
