Default Report Says 20% of Macs Are Infected with Windows Malware

It's the sort of statistic that would all but certainly alarm the Centers for Disease Control if the numbers were about humans. Notwithstanding the fact that the latest epidemic of infection is about machines and not people, some remain alarmed regardless.

According to a new report from Sophos, Windows malware is so common these days that one in every five Macs is infected with it.

"A 100,000 strong snapshot of the millions of Mac computers which have recently downloaded Sophos's free Mac anti-virus software, revealed that 20% of Mac computers were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware," the Naked Security Blog reads.

This staggering percentage blows away the percentage of Macs believed to be similarly infested with OS X malware. 2.7% (one in 36) of Macs which downloaded the free anti-virus product were infected by Mac OS X malware.

While Windows malware on Macs isn't going to be obvious or (even symptomatic if you're not running Windows on the Mac), the malware can easily spread like a virus during cold and flu season.

Umm I'm not even sure how to respond to this... If something is capable of infecting Mac platform it's not a Windows only malware. Unless we are talking about Mac with bootcamp... because I know some Mac antivirus software can actually search for windows malware.

Either way this article whether it's a bad source or badly reported here is trash. Doesn't really explain anything on how a Mac could have windows Malware.

it only means that the virus is there, it doesn't mean it affects the macs. Sort of like being a carrier for a disease in a human? Someone correct me if I'm wrong..

I believe what it's saying is that macs are getting the windows virus', however they have no effect on the OS, it simply is holding the malware, possibly to infect after a windows installation.

Well that is my exact point, you write an article like this you better have some info... Is it getting there because the bootcamp partition gives access to the Mac file system? Are the exploits for flash or java working to create some files on the Mac files system? It's a pointless article without any of that information.

It's like writing an article saying ".01% of dumpster can give birth to human babies - we found babies in dumpsters".

I find windows based maleware/trojans in my mail often. I clean it to prevent my Mac from spreading it to windows users. It does not affect my Mac in any way.

It is not saying the Mac is infected with the malware, but rather they are carrying the malware. This is misleading as the malware that Sophos' app is detecting are in email attachments sent to them from infected windows machines. This report is meant as a scare tactic from Sophos and other antivirus companies to make Mac seem as insecure as windows, when the fact remains that these are WINDOWS malware and have no dangerous effect on Mac users, even if you run boot camp or a virtual machine unless you actually open the attachment in the windows environment. The malware can not jump to the windows environment because it can not run on the Mac in the first place. Rubbish is the only word for this report.

Your sinply not listening to what people are saying, its got nothing to do with bootcamp or anything of the sort, windows virus are simply finding there way onto the macintosh hard disk, via download or other means. Macs are just not the intended target.

Its not a rubbish report, it merely outlines the contrast between mac and windows virus's, to give an illustration of the extent of windows' problem.

Guys. Read the image. This is just a different diagram of the types of viruses that were found. Some minuscule % of the 100,000 macs surveyed had viruses. This just outlines the frequencies.

Y'all are ridiculous. Article is alarmingly nonfactual.

I fully understand the article, but it's dumb.

I can tell you right now if I took a picture of my penis and named it "CelebrityLeakedNudes.jpg" and proceed to spam everyone with this via email and post in on forums there would be some people lets even say %0.1 of the computers. Now if someone else did something similar and mass mailed everyone as well then he could hit 0.1% too i bet... now lets just pretend there are ******* thousands of these people doing this (which there are if not more) then well I'm pretty sure we can hit %20. What does this mean? ******* nothing... do I need to buy anti-penis-pics software? Does this mean I need to put anti-penis-pics for my mac? naw probably not...
