Default Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac Service Pack 2 Auto Updates Pulled Due to Issues

Microsoft seems to have stopped pushing out auto-updates for its Office 2011 for Mac Service Pack 2 due to a flaw that corrupts identity databases in the company’s Outlook mail client. The company announced the issue through the Microsoft Office blog where it also notified users that automatic updates for SP2 will temporarily be suspended while the company investigates the cause of the problem.

A small excerpt from the post mentioned the following:

On April 12th, we released SP2 for Office for Mac 2011. The majority of our customers have been delighted with the improvements – new features and performance. Unfortunately, a small percentage are experiencing some issues with the update, specifically related to the Outlook for Mac database.
Just five days after the initial release of SP2, Microsoft posted a workaround and apology to users that were affected by the update. The first workaround deals with the users who have yet to install the update and calls for the rebuilding of Outlook’s database. The second (which was a more comprehensive fix) deals with those who already installed the patch and involves a complicated procedure to restore the database to working condition from an existing backup.

People who use Office 2011 for Mac can still download the Service Pack 2 through Microsoft’s website, though it is recommended that the workaround be implemented prior to installation. The SP2 update was said to bring a slew of enhancement for Mac OS X Lion users such as full-screen display modes and performance improvements. Although there are issues now, it will only be a matter of time before they are resolved so those who want to just wait out for a fix, probably won’t have to wait that long.

Hmm but the waiting period should not be longer.

I haven't had any issues yet. No one's come in a complained about anything either. Guess it was just a small number.

When I updated it said that the database was corrupt - it then offered to do an update and seems to be ok now.

I've had three fail spectacularly. Everyone on campus who tried the upgrade also got nuked (about 25 more users). Most of us have not taken risk and, apparently, for good reason.
