Default Apple to be Top Mobile Processor Company Soon According to In-Stat

A study from mobile technology research firm In-Stat, claims that Apple will be overtaking Intel in the mobile processor business if the company’s smartphone and tablet sales continue to grow. Assuming that the trend continues, the change will likely take place before 2013.

At the end of last year, Apple shipped roughly 176 million mobile processors accounting for 13.5% of the market and trailed Intel by only 5 million units. The difference represents a narrow 0.4% difference in market share. According to In-Stat Chief Technology Strategist Jim McGregor states that “Apple’s continued success of the iPhone and iPad, as well as the stronger growth rates of smartphone and tablet markets than PCs” will help the company catch, than surpass Intel in market share.

The study counted the processors found in a multitude of mobile devices, including the iPod Touch, portable gaming systems such as Sony’s PlayStation Vita, and e-readers. Desktop computers and servers were not included in the count. Analysts are predicting that the growing tablet market, which is estimated to reach 326 million shipments in 2015, is set to surpass the ailing PC market.

The ARM-based A-series processors created by Apple are already powering every iDevice sold, while Intel seems to have only begun to introduce its Atom chips in smartphones and tablets. As of right now, the A4, the A5, and the A5X can be found in all of Apple’s current offerings. All of them are designed by the Cupertino California company and manufactured by Samsung. According to McGregor, “the more successful Apple is, the more credibility it adds to the entire ARM camp and the more competitive the ARM camp becomes as a whole.”

Here are some corrections to your post:

In addition, the article does not indicate that ARM is a Apple company, it says "ARM-based A-series."

    FYI:
    1. ARM was founded by Apple and few other companies, but Apple still licenses their technology to use in their A-series processors.
    2. there =/= their
