Apple Hires John Browett of Dixons as New Senior Vice President of Retail

Apple recently announced that it had hired John Browett, former CEO at European Technology Retailer, Dixons, to be its new Senior Vice President of Retail. Browett has served as CEO at his former company since 2007 and before that he was the CEO of Tesco.com. He has a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and an MBA from Wharton Business School.

In Apple’s press release announcing this information, Tim Cook said “our retail stores are all about customer service and John shares that commitment like no one else we’ve met. We are thrilled to have him join our team and bring his incredible retail experience to Apple.”

Browett will be taking over Apple’s former head of retail, Ron Johnson, who played the key role in the formation of the company’s retail business and spent more than 10 years at its helm before stepping down to join retailer JC Penney as CEO last November. Apple's CFO, Peter Oppenheimer has been the active retail chief during the interim period. After he assembled a team that included former Apple alumni, Johnson released JC Penney’s new strategy last week in The Wall Street Journal with a very Apple-like full-page ad (which can be seen below):



Apple was reported to have engaged in a global recruitment firm last summer to help look for a new retail executive with international experience. The company’s business has recently been skewed towards international locations and Apple has revealed that last fall, 75% of its retail stores set to open during the December quarter would be outside of the U.S. Looking ahead, Apple is set to open new stores within Target stores in the U.S. as well.

We’ll have to wait and see how well John Browett does and if anything will change (although I highly doubt it will).

I used to work at DSGi before they culled their staff.

I met the guy a few times when he started, and he was a very nice and genuine guy. From the emails he sent out he defiantly speaks the "Apple talk". Apple have got a winner here.
