Tim Cook Unveils New Apple Employee Discount at Town Hall Meeting

It just got a little sweeter to be an Apple employee today.
Tim Cook announced yesterday at a Cupertino Town Hall meeting new discounts available to both corporate and retail Apple employees. Before yesterday Apple employees enjoyed a nice 25% discount on Macs which equates to $250 for every $1,000 spent on a new mac. The new discount is a flat $500 off any Mac excluding the Mac Mini (which would almost be free). User’s would need to purchase a $2,000+ Mac for the discount to be less than the $500 credit.
Also, Cook announced all Apple employees would get $250 off any iPad. This is huge as well. Apple employees could get a new entry-level MacBook Air and a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 for $750, effectively cutting the total cost in half. So much for the 25% discount.
While the deal seems almost too good to be true some caveats apply. Apple employees can only utilize this opportunity every three years and must have worked at Apple for a minimum of 90 days. The three-year restriction seems a little steep, but the 90-day requirement is reasonable.
Well I’m off to apply for a part-time retail position.

The 3 year period does seem kind of steep, but then again, so is the discount depending on which Mac you buy. I'm surprised they wouldn't shorten it for iPads. They don't want their employees running around with last year's tablets, do they? But hey, 50% off is pretty awesome!
I wonder if part-time employees get this deal. Three months in an Apple store for decent pay and huge discounts on the latest gear would be pretty sweet!

This is much worse than it used to be. They used to get 25% off of 3 computers per year, 25% off 3 iPads per year. I guess they don't want family members of apple store employees getting discounts

Umm sounds like the old 25% off might have been a better deal... $500 off once every 3 years seems kinda low.

How well does apple pay its employees in the first place?

Hahah whenever stuff like this is released, you've got to read between the lines.
This was probably initiated to stop apple employees from buying all of their friends and relatives products at 25% off or maybe even buying products at 25% off and re-selling them online.
Of course, if the old plan had similar restrictions, then this logic would then not old water. That doesn't seem to be suggested here though.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

"User’s would need to purchase a $2,000+ Mac for the discount to be less than the $500 credit."
So what your saying is if your buying a more expensive Mac then you get less of a discount? I read about this elsewhere and whatever your attempting to say here isn't mentioned so do explain.

01-26-2012, 09:59 PM #16thanx for that i wondered what 25% was25% discount on Macs which equates to $250 for every $1,000 spent on a new mac.

That confused me too. It wouldn't make sense for apple to give a $500 discount on a $1500 computer, but shrink the discount to something less - like $450 - for a $2200 computer.
I think it was just a poorly written sentence where he meant to say that the only products where the $500 discount is less than the 25% discount they previously enjoyed only when purchasing products for over $2000.
