Mozilla Updates Firefox to 9.0.1 - Fixes Crashes on Mac OS X

Shortly after the release of Firefox 9.0, Mozilla ended up quickly releasing an update to fix a bug that was causing the browser to crash on Linux, Mac, and Windows systems.

Firefox 9.0.1 was released on Wednesday, leaving many users wondering what the update was for. The company didn’t specify in the 9.0.1 release notes why the update was needed but according to developers, the update was prompted by crash reports, primarily those from Mac users. To fix the problem which caused crashes when users ran certain add-on toolbars, Mozilla’s developers removed a patch that had been applied in version 9.0.

According to Alex Keybl, an engineering project manager from Mozilla’s release team, the company “built Firefox 9.0.1 with bug 708572 backed out.” He continued to say that the company “pushed Firefox 9.0.1 for all platforms. Although we think Windows is mostly unaffected, we still decided to move forward with Windows->9.0.1.” The rush update was the second by Mozilla in the last 30 days, with Firefox 8.0.1 being the previous one, released on November 21. The crashes were traced to an Apple update of Java earlier that month, which caused a high number of issues on the Mac OS X.

For those of you who use Firefox and updated to Firefox 9.0 before the 9.0.1 patch was applied, you can update your machine by hitting “About Firefox” from the Firefox menu (on a Mac) or “About Firefox” from the Help men under the Firefox button (on a PC). After this step, you have to approve the new version’s installation after it downloads (the rest should be pretty familiar).

Yeah, I do agree Mozilla seems to be rushing things a little. However, I always like to keep the open-source software as opposed to commercial software on my computer, one of the many reasons I hate iTunes. Chrome is not open-source, and Chromium for Ubuntu is not the same thing, and Explorer sucks(especially for web development). This leaves Safari(no), Opera, which is okay, and Firefox. And yes, I also use Lynx.
