Default 2012 CES Will Be Microsoft's Last, Says Tech Giant

On Wednesday, Microsoft stunned some with the revelation that next year's Consumer Electronics Show will be the last in which the tech giant participates. Fittingly, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will give the keynote address at CES 2012.

Although some are comparing the pullout to Apple's withdrawal from Macworld events, the reason for Microsoft's departure boils down to the company's claim that the best ways of communicating with consumers are rapidly changing. And, as a result, Microsoft will no longer provide keynote addresses and maintain a booth at the annual January tech spectacle.

"We'll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won't have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don't align with the show's January timing," reveals Frank X. Shaw, corporate vice president of corporate communications at Microsoft. "Microsoft has enjoyed a close to 20-year working relationship with the Consumer Electronics Association -- and we look forward to working with CEA for many years to come," Shaw added.

Taking yet another page from Apple's product-reveal playbook, Microsoft plans to make all future announcements regarding product launches and new technologies at their own corporate media events.

Putting the Windows 8 tablet interface on desktops was the worst tech idea ever.

Are you sure it's not because 2012 isn't everyone's last CES? Is 12/21/2012 still the end of the earth?

I just think that a bunch of sharp angled rectangles with white doodles on them is a bad theme for an OS.
