Default Apple Retail Stores to Start In-Store Pickup of Online Orders

Apple is reportedly planning to roll out a new pilot program that will allow customers to pickup orders placed through the online Apple Store in one of the company's physical retail stores.

The program is known as Sherwood and will extend to any product available for purchase in Apple's online store including "custom configured Macs, engraved and gift-wrapped products and the full slate of third-party accessories," according to MacRumors.

Individuals placing orders for third-party accessories and standard Mac configurations will be eligible for same-day in-store pickup, with other orders taking a few days to arrive in-store. Pickups will require an ID and proof of purchase, but customers will be able to designate one additional person the ability to pick up the purchase. Definitely helpful for those with busy schedules who aren't comfortable having items delivered to their homes.

Additionally Apple will begin accepting the return of online orders in-store, preventing customers from having to deal with the headaches of return shipping. Apple appears to be fully integrating the online and retail shopping experience with the Sherwood program. However, the program will only be available at a few select retail locations initially, with plans to extend it across the full spectrum of retail locations later.

This seems like something that Tim Cook had been trying to do for a while. I don't think Steve Jobs would have had it this way.

I think this is a great idea. If Jobs was against it, then that's upsetting, but this is something that will help customers. I for one never let anything ship to my home. Things get stolen all the time, and I can't be home to sign during the day.

This has been something Apple Australia have let us do for a very loooooong time... So I doubt Steve was against it.
