Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 Released - Mac Only For Now

Just a few minutes ago, the redsn0w testers (@redsn0w_testers) Twitter account tweeted out that the iPhone Dev-Team released an update for redsn0w (bringing it to redsn0w 0.9.9b5). The primary goal behind this release was to update redsn0w with the new public URLS for IPSW files. Basically, this allows first-time iOS 5 jailbreakers to not have to supply an IPSW file to jailbreak on iOS 5.

On the iPhone Dev-Team Blog, there was also mention that a little bit of functionality from PwnageTool was added to this release. In the Extras section in redsn0w, you can choose an option called "Custom IPSW" which will build an IPSW file without the baseband for 4.3.3 or iOS 5 GM (for iPhone 3GS and 4 only at this point). The team plans on updating PwnageTool for iOS 5 when an untethered jailbreak comes out.
Here is the full update on what is new and important with redsn0w 0.9.9b5 (READ CAREFULLY. THE WARNINGS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT):
As mentioned in the title as well as the body of Update #13, this version of redsn0w is for Mac users only until more testing on Windows is done.

Reminders:
- Redsn0w is still a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS old bootrom users. Otherwise, there is no untethered jailbreak at this time.
- You cannot jailbreak your iPad 2 on iOS 5 at this time

Im debating if i should upgrade, wait and then jb or wait, then upgrade jailbreak.
Any info would be appreciated

I've been running the iOS5 betas, tethered, as soon as they were available. I've never been caught out without my phone, except on one occasion when I hadn't updated one of the betas for some time and I was locked out. It's stable as anything and unless you install some crazy unstable tweaks, then there's going to be no reason for you to restart your device when you're not at home. That's my opinion on tethered anyway.

For anyone who doesn't know how to get into DFU mode learn before you try this JB. The countdown is WAYYYYYYYYYY off. Tethered jailbreaks aren't that bad. Agree with the previous poster on there not being may occasions I'll get caught having to reboot my phone

So the custom firmware feature really just makes a firmware that doesn't include a BB update? After restoring to this custom firmware you still need to run redsn0w to jailbreak it, correct?

Yeah I would see it being a problem if I had to shut off my phone. In all honesty I'm having some problems with my phone freezing currently (probably my error) All i've downloaded from cydia is sbsettings. May just go back unjailbroken ios 5 and wait for something a little more stable and untethered.

Is there a way to upgrade iOS without un jailbreaking your phone? Or must I upgrade the iOS and then re jailbreak. I never upgraded so I'm still untether jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1? Can any one help me?

Darn, should've read here first. I also had the Cydia issue and thought it was some error so it's in the process of jailbreaking again - doh! Next time I'll make sure to boot tethered.

10-12-2011, 11:31 PM #16So I could actually do an untethered JB + unlock on my 3GS if my bootrom is old enough?!It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS
What version would that be?

Are you talking about the 'new ipt4g? Or the older model of the ipt4gen?
The older one you can jailbreak untethered, assuming you mean the newer model..no there is no untethered jailbreak at this time because the new iPod touch ships with ios5.
Hope this helps.
Correct you must upgrade first then rejailbreak.Last edited by mmaboi21; 10-12-2011 at 11:43 PM.

The walk through timing to get yr phone into DFU in redsn0w.app is not working on my computer...... it goes into recovery mode instead of DFU.
To get iPhone into DFU Mode (for the initial jailbreak or for a reboot):
1. Open redsn0w.app, click "Jailbreak" (or Extra's" then click "Just Boot" once jailbroken for a reboot)
2. Hold both the power and home button down for 10 seconds (does not matter if the phone is on or off)
3. After 10 seconds release the POWER BUTTON ONLY, your phone will kick into DFU mode and redsn0w will see this and do its stuff, once you see redsn0w installing you can release the home button.
My only problem at the moment is within Cydia, when I try to add a source or search for something using the keyboard, Cydia crashes..... I have rebooted a couple of times already.......any idea's?

My problem is Safari and Mail app. once I update to iOS 5 thru iTunes everything works perfect, once I jailbreak and reboot tethered, Safari and Mail app open and crash, I rejailbreaked like 10 times already with the same issue.
