Default HTC Considers webOS Acquisition to Battle iOS

HTC has opened up about its interest in HP's webOS as a possible candidate for acquisition.

In a freshly published interview with the Chinese-owned Economic Observer of China publication, Cher Wang, chairwoman of HTC Corp., reveals that her company is actively considering buying another smartphone operating system. "We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang stated.

If HTC goes forward with this option, it will suddenly become a smartphone maker that can serve up three different smartphone OSes in its product offerings. "We can use any OS we want," Wang said."We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS."

The second and third layers refer to the "HTC Sense" user interface, which HTC says provides its smartphones with more user-friendly features and better software integration compared with other Android phones.
Of course, there's no guarantee that HTC will be the lone bidder for webOS. There is rampant speculation that fellow smartphone rival - and Android handset maker - Samsung, is similarly weighing the same potential acquisition. If HTC and Samsung have anything else in common here its their mutual animosity toward Apple. Presently, both mobile tech titans are involved in more patent struggles and pending lawsuits with Apple than we can possibly neatly summarize here.

Don't do it HTC. Stick with Android. You don't want to try and build another ecosystem to rival iOS and Android.

Edit: Btw, the ole "only showing one comment" feature is back.

Default Look at the previous story....
Look at te previos story "no discernable difference...." That should begin to clue you in as to what I'm referring to below....

If that were to happen that would absolutely be kickass. I have used all of the OSes and can vouch the only real contender is webOS. An HTC or Samsung product with webOS would give android a run for its money because it is polished and clean as iOS and has none of the legal baggage like android. Dont get me wrong I loved my iPhone (had to leave ATT, currently on Sprint), I would still be with my Palm Pre if it werent for the missing Key Apps that I'm sure Samsung or HTC can make or work with the developers. Look at the Sense 3.0 or Touchwiz look at some of the their own "homebrew" Apps and Widgets.
It can be done, I have a TouchPad aside from lacking an external camera, its is pretty decent. If it had a cheaper price point and more savvy marketing it could have taken off. Pick up a palm pre or touchpad or veer they are all cheap now and get a feel for what I am referring to. I dont have a Pre or similar as they donot have a decent VNC app or similar on the platform.Right now you may say " this is modmyi we dont talk about or give kudos to a rival system or platform". Think about this how much has iOS really changed in comparison to ANdroid? We need a real contender that will last and push Apple further as Steve is no longer "in charge". Theyre going to need a reason besides money (look at M$) to further innovate.
Lion is leaps above Win 7 and possible Win 8, but they are only really competing with them selves. Lion should have been more but because the lack of real innovation (not to say there isnt any) with iOS, and us Mac users need iOS to really get moving because those changes trickle on down back to OSX; in reality they are on in the same.
In short a real competitive OS + cheap or affordable hardware from an establised name that has been able to compete with Apple (HP is definitely not that company) Wil mean nore feature rich cheaper iPhones that are not models from 1-2+ years ago that will become quickly outdate with a new OS release. It benefits all.Dont like it flame away

If they can get the WebOS cheap, they can definitely use their smart phone knowledge with hardware and be a valuable company going along with the fact they can potentially produce phones on all other platforms but iOS.

People using Android have no further revenue stream - Apple do from the App store. If HTC got WebOS then they too could have their own app store and an ongoing revenue stream and with potential licensing problems with Android then an alternative might not be a bad idea for HTC.

The ongoing revenue stream from Android is Google's--the Android market (and the other markets, to a lesser extent) and delivery of targeted advertisements. The OEMs get zilch. WinMo7 is the same way (though I think OEMs are allowed some unique to their brand apps, so that's something). I hate to say it, but the money (for everyone except Apple) is in owning your own OS. HTC could really use it, but I bet the price will be too high.

Where did you read to battle iOS? I'm pretty sure Android is kicking iOS's *** as it is. WebOS had potential but came in WAY too late and I bet theres some tech in WebOS that would have a nice home in Android/SenseUI.

just stick with android. If webOS failed for HP it wont work for you.

WebOs is awesome and Android is a joke. This would be a smart move for them. I just hope whoever gets it has enough resources to keep WebOs going for the long haul. iOS is #1 to me with WebOs as the runner-up.

I have a HP webOS and I wish some one will keep this alive. Sent I purchase I have been using this more then apple. Yes it does have a lot of work but it respond better then honeycomb, I can't compare this with the iPad but I agree that the ios need a new look. The best thin about webOS is that have flash and java so you can make any app and make it work. I hope they purchase it and keep this alive.

htc Should not do it.#1 to own WebOS they will have to create a new department that constantly think up ideas to update their WebOS.#2 They will have to hope their new ideas is not something Apple saw in a sci-fi movie and patent the idea claiming it their own.#3 They will need a large amount of money for lawyers to defend against patent lawsuits.htc should just keep doing what they do best, make the hardware that uses the OS well.
