Apple Coughs Up More Than Half of The Total Nortel Patent Sale Price
Nearly one month ago, Apple, RIM, EMC, Sony, Ericsson, and Microsoft paid a collective price of $4.5 billion for the rights to the 6,000-plus patents Nortel held. The potentially lucrative patents and patent applications spanned wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, internet, service provider, semiconductors and other patents.
As MMi reported July 1st, "the extensive patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets as well, including Internet search and social networking."
Although no shortage of prominent names are listed above, it was one company in particular that captured better than half of the entire portfolio (58% to be exact). You guessed it. Apple. The Cupertino, California based iDevice-maker forked over some $2.6 billion for its share of the Nortel patents.
That's not a lot for Apple which has $76.2 billion in cash on hand. If it was going to spend money on a big acquisition this makes the most sense. It protects Apple and could potential crush Android.
