Spotify Offering Free Unlimited Access to Music for First Six Months
Spotify launched last week in the US with much fanfare, but one burning question was not answered at the launch. How many hours of free music a month will be available for users with a free account? Spotify didn’t say at launch, but now it seems that they have an answer.
Users with a free account will have access to an unlimited amount of music for only the first six months. After that, limits will go into effect that will cut users off after they reach a set limit of hours a month. In Europe, users with free accounts are allotted ten hours of free music a month. Spotify has not said what the limit will be here in the US, but you can bet that it will be in line with what’s currently available in Europe.
Spotify has been trying to launch in the US for at least two years, but has been blocked at every turn. Now that they’re finally available here, they undoubtedly want to gain as much exposure for their music service as possible. What better way to do that, then to not impose any limits till the end of the year.
Spotify will remain free with no limits in the US until sometime around January 14, 2012. After that, who knows, but five bucks a month doesn’t seem like too much to ask for what they have to offer. Plus, you won’t have to put up with all those pesky ads if you get a paid account.

Grooveshark has no limits. What are these idiots thinking? This isn't Europe. Spotify may dominate across the pond but they will get crushed stateside.

Grooveshark is also of questionable legality... though I like them as a spunky underdog, mostly because they support jailbreaking.

Spotty has a massive outpouring of good PR working for them right now, but they'll get stonewalled eventually by the iTunes Match + Pandora/Last.fm + Grooveshark/MOG/Rhapsody/Rdio combo in the States, I bet... or they'll get bought out.

You really comparing spotify with Grooveshark.
No!! That's a kid's comparison.
I have used all the apps and my iTune itself has 2.8 TB of music but nothing compares to spotify.
I mean it.
Use it for few weeks n see if you can let it go.
I can't .......
I signed up for free then unlimited but premium is the way to go.
Hey 9.99 is not much for the stuff we get with premium.
I have searched and listen to those songs, I could never imagine I will find it in a app.
Free/ unlimited doesn't attract me, because still I have to sync my iPhone, so its like iTune but I don't own those songs.
It does happen to me that all of sudden I remember a song, which I really wanna listen at that moment but I can't because I don't have in my iPod or in my spotify free/UL.
And by the time I get back home.
The charm is gone.
But with premium I have every song with me.
And I am lucky to have my grand fathered unlimited data plan.
This is my point of view, but I will never dare to compare spotify with any other apps.
They deserve all the credit and my $9.99 every month.

Who needs an invite?
Update: Spotify gives Premium (maybe the same for Unlimited) subscribers 4 invites. I've used mine up, so if you got one of mine, spread the love to the others here.Last edited by AfterMercyFM; 07-18-2011 at 06:16 PM.

I've subscribed with a free account for now, but when I try to play a song it tells me that "Streaming is only available to Premium subscribers".
Where's the unlimited access?
Am I doing something wrong?

Streaming from your phone is only offered to Premium subscribers. Lame, I know but that alone made me jump to Premium. Free let's you stream online from your computer. Which again is kind of lame because you're able to listen to all your songs already or just YouTube them.
