Apple Holding Back New Mac Hardware Until Lion Release
It would seem that Apple is holding back new Mac hardware updates until the official release of Mac OS X Lion next month. Apparently, Apple would like to showcase their latest and greatest new operating system on new hardware. Apple has yet to release an exact release date for Mac OS X Lion, only stating that it will be out sometime in July. Presumably, new Mac hardware updates will begin to ship around this time frame as well.
The latest reports coming out of Asia indicate that Apple has already gone into high production of updated MacBook Air models. These updates are expected to bring the latest models up-to-date with the rest of the MacBook Pro line by including updated Sandy Bridge processors and new high-speed Thunderbolt I/O ports. Supposedly, these new models are ready to ship, but Apple doesn’t want to release them with Snow Leopard preinstalled.
Other Mac model updates are also said to be on hold until Lion’s release, including updated versions of the Mac Mini and Apple’s LED Cinema Display. Apple has plans to release iOS 5 in the fall, most likely in time for the annual iPod event in September. New iOS devices are not expected to come out until after Apple’s iCloud service has officially been released to the public as well.
By the end of the year, Apple will have completed major upgrades to both of its operation system. Once these updates are complete, all new Apple computers will ship with the latest version of Mac OS X Lion.
So, if you’ve been wanting to buy a new MacBook Air, you might want to wait a little bit longer and pick one up next month. By then, Mac OS X Lion will be out and you can save yourself $30 and a rather lengthy 4GB download.
