So ppl, since last night i read this article i searched, searched and searched.
    Answer is following:
iMac's are upgradeable. But with limited number of drives (not all are compatible) and with app from enthusiast programmer. App checks SMART data from HDD and adjust fan speed.

Anyway - bu-fu-chu on you, who decided to make iMac's like this. I live more than 300km from the nearest apple store (and don't even know if it is a service centre), imagine HDD fails. Am i f/b-ucked, cause i have to wait no one knows how long for a replacement? I'm enthusiast and can do any repairs myself, so don't take those possibilities from people who can do such. "Joe-user" will go to apple store anyway...

Nope, you did. UNIX is greater than DOS in every way. Refer to A3gOwner's post.

Please learn the difference between the two words, "offense" and "defense".

G5's are not intel processors. They're motorola. Did you mean i5?

Look into a used MacBook pro.

Where are your facts about SJ being greedy? Perhaps if you researched before your comment
you would know he only takes
$1 a year as payment, and that
is only so he is a legal
    employee.

Hmm--- how much money does he have in apple stock?

Ok...lrt's hope this idea doesn't migrate to the MacBook or MacBook Pro lines. I've always wanted n iMac, but I won't be purchasing one now. It's not too much to keep the HD and RAM user upgradable. Ridiculous to take that away...

Here is what i never understand about some of theses forums.
Just because this is a forum about Apple, does not mean we have to LOVE every single thing about Apple or everyone of their products. Some of you take negative comments about Apple personally. Get over it. People can still not like an Apple product or prefer another computer besides Apple.
I own iphones because as of now its the best phone for me. But as far as Apple goes, lets just say I'm not crazy about them. I own PC's and that's all I will ever own. Like most here I like to have the ability to change/upgrade whatever parts I want when I want. Does that mean I shouldn't be on this site or give my opinion?
My GF has always had Macs. I just bought her the new iMac 27". Spent $2500 in Apple store last weekend. What a F'd up store that is by the way. Now your going to tell me I cant change out the hard drive if i need/want to? But because this is an Apple site I should still shut my mouth and praise them? Ya gotta be kidding me...some people are like zombies and have a one track mind.

Let's see, since when did steve jobs need any of u to defend him? Last I checked he doesn't know any of u and he makes hella cash. Don't know if he's greedy or not but the word egotistical control freak comes to mind. Basically it boils down to him thinking we're all to stupid to be messing around with his product. It's a great product but kinda condescending when u pay all that money for something to be told what u can't do with it. If u want apple then your gonna have to toe the line. PC guys can jump the fence and go crazy. It's your choice. Just remember, some people do better with having things shoved down there throat. If your willing to give up on certain freedoms when it comes to your computing then apple is ur man, if not just go do your thing your way on a pc. Choice people

I'm not sure about the money he wisely invested in Apple.

Look at Gates. He gets paid huge sums, and has stock. Then to get people to like him, he does big public stunts where he gives most of it away.

Also, why the hell does everyone think that SJ runs everything inside apple? People, he's not superman.

Yeah gates does it For "tax purposes" and pr/making himself look good tho I think. Just my opinion. Sj does like to be a part of things but by no means he run everything. Someone will come up with a cfw for the hard drive and a diy cable it's just a matter of time/need for it. Then a swap should be pretty simple.

Hope so. But to me, the point is, no one should have to. We shouldn't have to have special cables made and what not just to swap out a hard drive if need be. At least we can still change the battery's in the mouse if we need to....for now...until Apple thinks we are too stupid for that

But see everyone wants to jump the gun and gripe apple this apple that. When I haven't seen anyone question why. There might be a good reason for it. They are going to a 7 pin connector instead of the usual 4. Did anyone stop and think huh what's the extra 3pins for and what exactly do they do. They might know something that we don't about this whole thing. Mightbe something new or just a way to charge more who knows. We'll find out soon enough.

Good point. Whatever the reason is i just hope i am able to replace the drive if i need to. The idea lugging that machine back to Apple to get a hard drive replaced is just retarded and a pain in the arse
But then again...why did Apple switch screws on the iPhone 4? Did it hold it together any better?

you're being a fanboy. there is absolutely no reason that is good enough for apple to remove something as essential as being able to remove the hard drive. it's so you can pay more money to them so they can fix and upgrade it instead of letting you do it yourself

See but I'm not A fanboy by no means. I could careless what you use or why you use it. I use what I use for a reason and 90% of the time it's not osx or windows. Linux is my preferred os so hardware is just hardware to me. how ever I do have 2 macs (a mbp and a g5) and numerous "pcs and pc laptops". So how am I a fanboy? Now to me it makes more sense that they just opened up the sata to 6g/s and probably need more power to push the full I/o of the bus. You never know in the tech world.

That's about the only difference between the two.
I have no clue, eh? Yeah, sure, you master computer uber genious.

    1) Two words: "MS Office". Alas I need it, and it does not go well with wine.

    2) intel different than g5: yep, quite so, for some of the reasons above. G5 gives substantially less flexibility than intel (i.e., you can run natively windoze, most linux distributions, and osx), I have run linux for g5 (at some point I even had a beowulf cluster of 20 g5's running linux), but there weren't too many varieties and not a lot of precompiled software (sorry, I do not have time to compile everything from scratch, perhaps I should have hired an uber genious like you to run my systems).

Before you actually post and call somebody clueless, get a clue yourself.

Because you really believe that his $1 salary is his only income... Sure, I also have a bridge to sell you if you are interested.

My goodness, the apple fan boys are at full speed! What would I do in HI? Enjoy the place, perhaps you can not think of anything other than playing with the computer?

BTW: in case some other clueless person comes along: I currently have 1 iphone (jailbroken and unlocked), 1 ipod touch (jailbroken), 1 mac pro (8 cores), 2 imacs (intel, 1 white, 1 al), 1 ipad 2 (att 3G, 64G, arriving next week, can't wait to jailbreak it).

There is Microsoft Office for Mac. If you really need the windows version of office (for Publisher maybe) then Crossover runs it quite well on a Mac.

OpenOffice is a viable option too Crossover and cedega run it (ms office) pretty well on Linux. See if he knew tho and based on what he says will probably never get it. If he had a cluster of g5's like he claims then compiling any program should only take a matter of seconds to minutes tops (ie distcc or distributed c compiler) and if they all g5 then you'd only need to compile one kernel then copy to each respectively. I'll shut up now cause I don't know what I'm talking about obviously.

You can always get a macpro to customize as much as in a PC.

Not really, nowadays imac price is very competitive. a 27" ips monitor alone costs you more than $1000, check out the price of 27 ips on Dell.

It look like a MacPro, except it only has one disk drive slot and the highest OSX version I can run is 10.5.8. I was under the assumption that it had IMB processors, buit it's lack of Intel processors is why I can't run 10.6+.

I looked at used Macs all night. They're usually 70% of the cost of a new one to get a mystery machine with no warranty. Powermax is trying to sell G5 towers with 1 Gb of RAM, no install disks, and only 10.5 loaded for $1200! Eff that ess!

I'm gonna have to think long and hard on this one, because I'm NOT planning on buying a new comp for a few years after this one.
iPhone 4 to Android directly back to iPhone 4. I learned my lesson and will never leave iOS again.

Had seriously considered moving back to Apple. This news quashed that idea. Left Apple back in the 90's. Couldn't muster paying 2x for an stock drive with special Apple restrictions. I won't play their stupid games. My $$$, my choice!

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
