Default Steve Jobs Passes Einstein, Edison, and Gates Among Top Engineering Heroes

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has leapfrogged ahead of some legendary names on a new list honoring the great all-time heroes in engineering. A recent survey of 900 British engineering undergraduates by General Electric aimed to find the greatest engineering heroes who ever lived.

Surpassing the likes of Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and even Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs placed third overall on the list - ahead of Bill Gates but behind Isambard Kingdom Brunel and James Dyson, of Dyson vaccum fame - who pioneered the first Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner. Fittingly, Dyson really "cleaned up" when it came to this list, "sucking" the top spot away from the other prominent names on the list

Also turning up among the top ten were Nikola Tesla, Frank Whittle, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. Of the esteemed assembly of legendary names, Mark Elborne, President and CEO of GE UK, said: "Our research shows that iconic figures - both historic and modern - continue to inspire a new generation of engineers. We continue to see the impact of these icons all around us today; and our research shows that we have a proud tradition of pioneers and innovators in this country, which should be celebrated."

"With the very significant environmental, energy and healthcare challenges we face today and will face in the future, it is critical that we continue to inspire young people into engineering and science, nurturing future generations of Brunels, Newtons and Edisons," Elborne concluded.

Ummm I didn't know that the iPhone was more important than Relativity, or the man that basically laid the framework for all of modern physics. I guess I better tell my boss we picked the wrong field of work.

Edit: Also did we already forget the antenna issue? Sounds like engineering 101 is not required to get on this list.

So, it's possible to become an engineering hero by merely managing other engineers? (What Apple does is a footnote of importance compared to actual scientists).

Funniest thing I've read all week. He is a man to be admired for many reasons, but not above the others mentioned here.

Why is it that now days the news article on modmyi seems like other tabloid papers filled with nonsense, no he might have over taken Einstein but me personally and logically don't think jobs will ever pass Einstein more will unless he actually creates new technology. iPhone and iPod are not new technology bit old one technology improved.

I guess the world is better off, now that Apple brought the mp3 player & tablet to market. What would we do with out them?
I think those 900 engineers need to lay off the drugs...or maybe start taking some.
    If I can't mod it...I don't want it.

Steve Jobs does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as any of these people. What he has done is nothing compared to any of them. What a joke. Just shows how stupid and influenced people are. Steve Jobs is an admirable man for his accomplishments, but he's absolutely nothing compared to Einstein and Tesla. For cripes sake, Tesla was one of the greatest minds to ever live and changed the world with his inventions at least three times in his life!

Oh, brother. It looks like General Electric is trying to maneuver itself into the good graces of Apple.

Don't be surprised if GE is trying to bolster Apple's stocks for selfish reasons. GE is a for-profit corporation - they don't do anything that's not related to money.
