Apple’s Jonathan Ive Might Be Moving Back to England: Rumor
Jonathan Ive, Apple’s leading industrial designer, apparently wants to spend more time in his native England, if the rumors circulating are true. Ive outlined a plan to Apple’s board of directors, where he would commute from the Cupertino campus to his home in Somerset, England. Apparently, the board didn’t go for the idea and they’ve “been at loggerheads” ever since. Ive and his wife would like to move back to England so they can raise and educate their twin boys there.
A family friend recently stated, “'Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them.”
Back in 2008, Ive received a “golden handcuffs” option that allowed him to buy Apple stock when it was at a much lower price than it is today. He was able to buy Apple stock in the $100 range as long as he agreed to stay with the company. He is now eligible to sell the stock, which is reportedly worth approximately $30 million. Apple stock prices have gone up considerably since 2008, this week closing at $348.16 a share.
An Apple spokesperson predictably answered with “no comment” when questioned about Ive’s plans for the future. With Apple CEO Steve Jobs on a medical leave of absence, and Jonathan Ive possibly heading back to England, two of Apple’s most influential players may not be around to shape the future of Apple. Jobs recently refused to outline a plan of succession to the board of directors, although Tim Cook is the obvious choice. Will Apple still be as successful a company without its two most influential men? I certainly hope so. I would hate to see Apple head back to the dark days when Gil Amelio was in charge.

He should just build a machine to teleport to the U.S when he has to design something. Maybe it could also be made of "Magic"!!!!!

He's really moving to England to answer his real calling, replacing every commercial and trailer narrator in existance.

Surely Apple and Ive can come to some agreement where he can work from England.
He's a huge reason why all our products look the way they do, it'd be sad to see him go but that's what he wants then he should go.
If Ive and Steve both step down this year then Apples stock might drop low enough for me to afford a few shares

Apple should let him work and commute if he's that much of an important asset to them. Family first seems like something Apple would support. I guess Jonathan has enough sheckles to retire though yeah?

Apple should buy him a small island off the US coast. Then kidnap all his friends and family to put on the island. Lastly crack a whip and say get back to making more bad*** products.
Seriously it would be hard to see a guy torn between things he loves. Would make for a lifetime movie.

$30 million is just about enough money I need for the rest of my life. So if he leaves he's all set.

It's 2011: why do people still need to fly to meetings? I attend a lot of meeting myself. 98% of meetings could be done through webex or some other kind of telepresence thing, and FaceTime could be used for one-on-ones (although, this would be a good reason for Apple to pump up the capability for multi-participant FaceTime). Cisco even has some HD 'prosumer' telepresence thing that is supposed to be jabber client compatible.
The dude could easily get away with a week trip to Cupertino every 6 weeks and doing the rest virtually. If Apple doesn't want to do that, they are a bunch of idiots. You could easily negotiate the travel as part of his compensation ('want to move to England? Fine, but in lieu of paying for travel, no raise for you'). UK is pretty expensive place to live in style, so it would be a bit of a pay cut to move there at the same salary but, if that's what he wants, he should take it.

Wowzers... If you took Jobs and Ive away, all that would be left of Apple is "PP."
