You only need to look at the cell phone unlocking software scene to realize that dongles are still the rule of the day to prevent piracy. Sure, there's always cracked older versions floating around - but the latest stuff is pretty well protected.

Then there's DirecTV. Hacked quite a bit in the past, but through suing "test card" vendors out of existence and constantly fighting tooth and nail against hackers, you really don't hear much about pirated DirecTV anymore.

Then we have the Xbox 360, which while there were some hacks found - Microsoft has been quick to patch them and overall the 360 is rather secure for a Microsoft product.

Hacking is a one-way street that always eventually leads to progressively improved security measures in the products being hacked. Eventually you reach a point where hacking the product requires so much time and effort that few people will bother attempting it. And as Sony has shown, if you sue those few people, you'll have a pretty good deterrent against future hackers.

What's the ultimate hack to show Sony how you feel about the PS3? Don't buy one. There's nothing they can do to stop that.

So? As long as it's hacked once already, piracy will start to leak in and out like crazy. Hence the reason why Sony made such a big deal about this current lawsuit against Geohot. It doesn't matter if the exploits/jailbreaks/hacks get patched, it's already out in the open and that's all u need for piracy to start. I can easily find XBOX360 pirated games anywhere with the simple help of Google. I can get games that aren't even out for retail for at least 1 week.

Also, it's the same as jailbreaking an iDevice, have u seen the amount of pirated apps or games, as well as the repos that host them?

The most effective way to prevent hacking, as already mentioned in this thread, is to simply remove the need to do so. Allow the hacker-y types a little freedom to make some homebrew, maybe, or just let them install Linux, and most of them will be happy.

The real hackers have almost no concern for piracy - the Hackmii team behind most of the Nintendo Wii hacks are famously against piracy and actually try to include anti-piracy measures in their hacks, for example.

There will of course always be the hackers who do it 'because they can' - but that shouldn't need to lead to piracy. The best thing for a company to do these days is to reach out to the community. The Internet has been a very democratising force. I'm interested to see what came of Microsoft's meeting with WP7 jailbreakers...

The Titanic was the "unsinkable" ship and it sank, it's only a matter of time before the "unhackable" is hacked. You cant stop piracy, just like you can't stop crime, as soon as new technology is found, new exploits are found, just like when a new security system/anti-theft devices are made, thieves just take the car keys.

    This is not interesting news.

Exactly. Once people started seriously looking into cracking the PS3 it only took a few months.
The Xbox360 is rather secure in terms of getting it to run homebrew (not in terms of piracy though)

If all those keys have been gotten from the PS3, doesn't it make it almost impossible for Sony to prevent future hacks without changing the keys? However changing the keys means no current software would work so they can't stop it until the PS4.

I think there needs to be a happy medium found between Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and Apple by which some level of homebrew and hobbyist programming can take place on a system, but also that "hackers" need to realize that if they are so against piracy, by hacking these systems they are opening the door for what they claim to hate, regardless of thats their intention of not.
Like it or not, Geohot and Failoverflow made piracy happen on PS3.

I'm a jailbreaker, not an app pirate. I want apps that are productive and I will pay for them. AAPL, SNE, etal. should know the distinction.

I dont see how they do? Apart from a little warning screen saying piracy is bad umkay once the Homebrew Channel is installed there is no anti-piracy measure against the dozen and dozens of "backup" loaders

I can see it now... Putting two erasers and a nickel on the main gpu and then plugging in a flash drive will hack the unhackable ps3...

I say a nickel because sony's taking even cheaper shots than Microsoft...

The FIRST way to make it hackproof is NOT to say its hack proof. Then the hackers will want to prove you wrong.

The 2nd way is to get one of these hackers to show you how to make it hackproof.
just like what GeoHot did. Micro$oft see's it like the smart person and gives GeoHot a phone and probably tells him to reply with ways to make it hack proof but they never said its hackproof thats the 1st and 2nd already done.

$ony on the other hand have no mind and are so stupid they think if they sue everyone then nobody will want to hack it and it'll be hack proof. NO CHANCE. There will ALWAYS be hackers and there WILL be a way to hack it.

I have a huge history with $ony and I've actually taken them to court and I won and I'm a little person, not a hacker so these bigger name people like GeoHot who are hackers and know what they are doing have a hige chance of getting more out of $ony than I did.
Well, I'm about to take them to court again and this time for a $10k refund. It looks like I'll get it too but we'll have to wait for the court case and see how it goes. There is too much against them this time for me to loose.

Anyway, back on topic, hackproof is just a red flag. NEVER say it unless you want it hacked.

"Geohot will make Sony even more angry, after PS3 jailbreak, Geohot now will intend to jailbreak Xperia Play. Geohot will be the first person in line when Xperia Play is launched so that he can push his new jailbreak to it."

Nothing is hack proof!!! And saying this is going to be like a big red flag to people to break the protection instead why not challenge people to create great software to complement the ps3!!!

Apple couldn't prevent jailbreaking for like twenty versions of iOS. all of the generations of iPhone ipt etc have been hacked. I can't see how Sony can make the ps3 hack proof.

Claiming that Sony is suing Geohot for hacking, and therefore allowing piracy, is false. That's like claiming that because supercharger manufactures allow cars to exceed the speed limit (or do so easier) and therefore break the law, they should be sued by car manufacturers. Or because DVD burners can be used for piracy, the manufacturers should be sued by movie companies. Just because people do illegal things doesn't mean that their actions call for the banning or suing of a product or company (or person in this case). Once I buy a car or a computer, I can do what I want with it. Sony broke the law by removing OtherOS. Pretend you bought a car with a V8 and then the car company said bring the car in so we can put in a 4-cylinder or you won't have a warranty anymore. It's illegal. Sony should be ashamed of themselves. They're suing Geohot because he did something Sony didn't approve of, and did so in a somewhat arrogant "come and get me" manner. I hope that they take a hit in sales from people boycotting them. They think they're "losing" money thanks to Geohot, wait 'til they see the money they lose from the uprising of the jailbreak/modding community.

Nothing will ever be hack proof. These guys do this for free, imagine if someone was paying them. And if I remember correctly Geohot took 1 year from start to finish to hack the PS3. It took one whole summer to unlock the iPhone it took working on the PS3 for a year. I would imagine an experienced paid tech could do it do it quicker.

Wasnt the XBox 360 going to be hackproof? I seem to remember a big hoohah about how Microsoft had done "it". Wasnt it 6 weeks after launch that the 1st hack was announced into the DVD firmware?

    There will always be ways..

Doubt this is any more true than the other "hack proof" stuff that has rolled out. I mean are we really supposed to believe that whatever this is would be the first "hack proof" thing to hit the market?

If this somehow is true and Apple adopts it I will simply drop iOS and stay strictly Android and NEVER look back. Hell, I may just do that strictly on principle at this point.

Apple isn't the God of security like they have made people believe. At most hacker conventions Apple's OS's are the first to fall (talking mere seconds). Others don't last much longer, but the point still stands. Video game companies also have a lot more to lose than Apple does in this case.

Couldn't they run a unique code into the game. Duplicates are shut down? Console is "tagged" 3rd "tag" and they use a "kill code" wreck your console? Ok it would only work online, and you couldn't lend it to your friends or anything. But would solve the issue.

Yeah unfair but would stop piracy.

But then 20 for a new release game rather then 40-50 would help alot too.
