ProTools 9 Coming November 12

Recording software giant Avid is releasing ProTools 9 on November 12. This is welcome news to musicians and audio engineers everywhere, since the last major update was two years ago. This upgrade will include an impressive array of new features allowing users to work more freely and collaborate with others more easily.

ProTools 9 increases the number of tracks and busses you can use. Now, you can record up to 96 or 192 simultaneous audio tracks (available with the ProTools HD version). You can also have up to 128 instrument tracks, 512 MIDI tracks, 256 internal busses, and 160 aux tracks per ProTools session.

ProTools now includes a new software-only version, great for laptop users on the go. Avid has finally cut the cord on ProTools so you’ll never have to lug around a cumbersome Mbox in your laptop bag again. Also, collaborating with other ProTools users will be easier now with their new file interchange support. Now you will be able to share projects created in other audio and video software packages more easily with ProTools and vice-versa.

Avid recently updated the Mbox line to version 3. ProTools 9 will complement the latest Mboxs quite well and make for a powerful combination.

Before the advent of inexpensive audio software like ProTools, recording music was a daunting task requiring expensive equipment and a host of engineers. Nowadays, you can record a number one hit in your basement if you have the right tools and some talent. ProTools may have a steep learning curve, but the results you can achieve with it can rival that of higher end recording studios. All you really need is three chords and the truth, and a good mike.

It's all in the product names. "Garage Band" implies that it is for an amateur band playing in the garage. "Pro Tools" implies that it is a suite of tools for professionals.

It holds true too: Real garage bands are more likely to use Garage Band and real professionals are more likely to use Pro Tools.

Just to get the record straight:

1) download versions are already available. Only boxed version will be available at nov 12;

2) It now works with ASIO and core audio, which not only allow you to use it with the buit in audio of your computer, but also allow you to use ANY audio interface that you own, which is THE main feature of that release and the article does not made it clear;

3)It implemented the EUCON protocol, which made incompatible with Euphonix controllers;

4) PT is no garage band, it's one of the most used professional DAWs in the pro audio market for decades;


I already got my copy and it's great that now I can finally use it with my RME fireface 800!

You do realize that the bare-bones version of ProTools is $400, right? That doesn't even scratch the surface of a ProToolsHD setup. You can buy a Pod Studio UX2 for $200 and use the open source DAW Reaper for free, and have way more capability than what $400 will get you with ProTools.

I'll be sticking with Logic Studio either way. ProTools has never been anything but a headache for me. It's like the Microsoft Windows of audio editing software. It's a standard and more widely used, but not necessarily the best.

I don't know I'm a pro tools /logic/cubase/nuendo/propellerhead user and the best software out for part time artists producers or rock bands is propellerhead reason/record 5 & 1.5. Everything that all the other software offers together is all in reason record and they all work together like magic on the MacBook. I just use my protools Mbox as a sound card that's all the hype is with avid protools. The software is cool but can't wait to see how it runs through your stock sound card. I think if you only have $500.00/$1.000 get the propellerhead reason/record you will be surprised how great it works. Start making music now with propellerhead reason/record.

something like garageband? Deadmau5 makes his music with pro tools. it's hardware based too, so you need to buy a ton of stuff for it too like combinators and mixers.

basically if you want you music to be heard on the radio and in every club and be super famous and are a musical genius then pro tools is what you use. garageband is for fooling around.

You do realize that basic equipment needed to create similar effects is at least $15,000, right? Most people would just rent studio time at hundreds/hour.

People still rent studio time, but software changed the game. What used to be thousands upon thousands of dollars in what felt like unending investment can be replicated with software and a little hardware. Without the advent of pro software, many would absolutely have no way to afford to experiment and make their own music or otherwise reduce production costs.

Educate yourself. That was a perfectly worded point. Software HAS made what was impossibly approachable now easily manageable. It IS cheap for what it does. If $400 for professional software is too much for you, it's probably because you're not making anything professional-grade or otherwise for professional purposes.

You can use all your GarageBand loops and logic loops even audio waves from protools or your fav software or any drum seq with propellerhead Reason 5/Record 1.5 for all of the die hard protools users plus you can rewire any any protools tracks to recreate any song you want.
