Plex Tech Demo Running on Apple TV
Plex media streaming software was recently demonstrated running on a 2nd generation jailbroken Apple TV. It’s really just a proof-of-concept demo at the moment, but it does show promise for future development on the Apple TV. Jailbreakers are quickly discovering what this little black box is capable of, and because Apple TV is based on the same hardware architecture as the rest of the iOS family, I’m sure the best is yet to come.
To use Plex on an Apple TV, you must have the Plex client-side software running on your computer. Plex then streams content from your computer to the Apple TV. As this is just a tech demo for now, Plex can only stream video content, not music or photos. The fact that developers have managed to get Plex running at all is quite an impressive feat. Officially, Apple does not allow any third party software on the device. This could all change, however, if and when Steve thinks the time is right to open an Apple TV App Store for the device.
It only makes sense that Plex would eventually come to the Apple TV. After all, Plex is already available for both the iPhone and iPad. It would seem to be only a matter of time before Plex is up and running smoothly on Apple TV. At this point, however, the tech demo hasn’t even been tested.
The future looks bright for Apple’s little hobby. I’d love to see someone get Hulu up and running in the not too distant future as well.

Would love to run Plex. Problem I have is that everything on my Mac is already .mp4 or .m4v ...i want Plex ported to Windows, but it is NOT, so I can use my windows computer that has all my .avi's, .mkv's, and .mpg's. I know XBMC is close, but it's not quite Plex. However, great start. Pretty soon my ATV 2 will be catching up with my 1st gen jailbroken ATV. Good to hear progress.

I am going to buy and ATVg2 and get this going this weekend. If it works well on the one I run in my bedroom, I will replace my Mac Mini in my livingroom with an ATVg2 and place my Mac Mini in my server rack.
I have been excited for this because it allows me to place streaming devices throughout my house for ~$100
Sweet!!

Noting my post above, Perian in NitoTV (like Nito in 1st gen ATV) would solve my problems. Hopefully we're not looking at too long. The problem I see, is unlike the 1st gen ATV, is that ATV2 doesn't have Quicktime and plug ins. I've SSH'd and researched, and it's no where to be found. It just streams over iOS. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Installing it tonight to test it out. Was reading the instructions yesterday over on the Plex forum, the one linked. I already run the Plex server because I use it on my iPad so that is no big deal.

Pretty sweet I no longer need to use my seagate flex-tv box to play videos that aren't in itunes.
I find that playing 1080p blu-ray rips fail after a few minutes, although i can stream the same file to my iphone without any problems so i know its not the server on my imac causing the issue.
also can't rewind or fast forward yet, just play/pause. but still it's awesome

I would just like Safari or Opera on the ATV. I think that's were we should spend most of our time. Other than that the ATV works pretty well.
Although I would prefer an Jailbroken IOS4 Ported to ATV
