AppleTV Gets It's First Jailbroken App: NitoTV

It didn't take long for our jailbroken AppleTV's to get rocking with custom Apps. The first app to come to AppleTV is called nitoTV.
nitoTV is a front end application for the popular mplayer media player. Using perian and Apple's DVDPlayback.framework, users can create playlists and add files or folders of their choice.
So what else does NitoTV do? Well it's more than just a media player. Supposedly you can even use NitoTV to play nes, snes, genesis, game gear and gameboy advanced roms, view RSS feeds and 3-day Weather forecasts.
At this point, you should be able to play almost any media file type. However, the installation process might have the unexperienced scratching their head. You will be required to SSH the files over to your AppleTV.
Note: The current installer packages are NOT for AppleTV 2, but the original AppleTV. At the moment the only portion for AppleTV 2 is the weather portion. Don't get too excited just yet.
While not everything is working 100%, this is still a big step forward for Apps on the AppleTV. NitoTV has tweeted "oh and ill do my best to have a basic nitoTV out soon with at least Weather and RSS feeds working.. other stuff will take longer.". So expect some updates in the near future for nitoTV.

Grab the installer and read more below:

Ummm... I'm pretty sure the installer is for AppleTV1 and WON'T work on the new iOS based AppleTV2. Only a helloWorld type POC has been released http://nitosoft.com/ATV2/helloWorld.zip

I'm confused... I downloaded it.. and it's "take three" and the SSH password in the instructions is "frontrow"? This can't be right.

I believe the only thing that nitoTV has developed for the new Apple TV is a weather "widget." It looks like they are working on a version of nitoTV to eventually run on it, but nothing has been released yet. Let me know if I'm wrong. I'd love to try out nitoTV however beta it might be.

Very confusing post nick. Too much old information on the links provided. Your OP leads one to believe this release does much more than being a weather app.

I agree, this is a very confusing story. The Wiki page says it is not for Snow Leopard machines? (nitoTV take 2 - For AppleTV Take 2: 2.0 - 2.1.0 limited 2.2.0/2.3.x/2.4/3.0.x support Now with leopard support
Current Version: 0.9.4
0.7.9 Leopard (Leopard Only, not Snow Leopard))
Is this just not updated? But the info on JB'ing the ATV2 is?
So has anyone figured this all out yet? LOL
UPDATE - the download gave me "NitoTV Take Three" we'll see how this goes...
UPDATED UPDATE - I see the story was updated to reflect the fact it is for ATV1...Last edited by luvmytj; 10-21-2010 at 03:54 PM.

Ya nothing has been released yet. Any nitotv packages that are available for download are for the first gen apple tv.

once xbmc is up i will be getting a new apple tv!!!

The problem is that Nito and XBMC and Boxee all by-pass the hardware accelerated playback. So don't expect 720p playback.

If this plays allows it to play .mkvs I will seriously consider getting an ATV 2.

I doubt whether MKVs would work.
But an app like AirVideo could allow real-time conversion!

I'd be happy if it just played content (with meta-date) off a file share.
Something like Sapphire (but not rubbish)
I don't want to use iTunes for my TV and Movie collection.
