This is a good start. Maybe a Computer based Cydia to get jailbroken apps onto the TV, like Cyder so that the AppTV can use Cydia.

I just ordered a new Apple TV yesterday.
With the current firmware easily jailbroken, and the proof-of-concept app by Nitotv successfully running, I felt that it was as good a time as any to get in on the game. I see lots of potential here.
I would have never even considered buying the new Apple TV if it hadn't been jailbroken. The limitation on the file formats was a deal-breaker. I hope there will be workarounds for playing non-apple file formats in HD.

Amen, Mr. OrangeFont!
I use an Xbox360 to stream my media from a Home Server, but even that has file format limitations.
Some of the other boxes (Popcorn Hour, Roku etc.) have a great compatibility list, but they either have clunky interfaces, are too expensive, or poorly designed.
I know the Apple TV has a great design and great interface, so I'm depending on the jailbreak community to take it to new heights.
I'm just a bit worried about 3rd party media players not having access to hardware accelerated playback... But, for $105 (after tax) I think it's worth the gamble.
