FaceTime is coming to Macs.
"The number one request we've gotten," said Jobs, "is can we please do FaceTime calling with these devices and the Mac?" With that, Jobs rolled out FaceTime for Macs. Answering a major request of many Mac users, today Steve Jobs demoed a FaceTime application for Mac OS X, a development that will rapidly expand the growth and usage of the video chat functionality made possible by FaceTime.
"We're really excited by this," said Jobs, reference the ability of iPhone 4 and iPod touch users now having the ability to video chat with Mac users via FaceTime, a new service available today on apple.com (in a beta). With nineteen million FaceTime users already spread around the world, it isn't hard to imagine that millions of new FaceTime users will be ushered into the era of video chat by way of today's revelation.
"I think people are going to like this based on the requests we've gotten," Jobs told the media gathered at Apple's Cupertino campus.
CUPERTINO, California—October 20, 2010—Apple® today announced the public beta of FaceTime® for Mac®, an entirely new application that allows Mac users to video call iPhone® 4 and iPod touch®* users as well as other Macs. Featuring an easy to use interface, FaceTime for Mac automatically uses your Address Book contacts so there’s no need to create special buddy lists, and it works seamlessly with the built-in camera and mic on Mac notebooks, iMac® and Apple LED Cinema Displays.
“FaceTime makes video calling to or from mobile devices easy for the first time,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve sold more than 19 million FaceTime-ready iPhone 4 and iPod touch devices in the past four months, and now those users can make FaceTime calls with tens of millions of Mac users.”
FaceTime for Mac requires Mac OS® X Snow Leopard® and is easy to set up with an Apple ID. The public beta is available immediately as a free download at www.apple.com/mac/facetime.
*iOS 4.1 required.

The real solution here is to get a Mac, jump on the bandwagon, you'll like it. Perhaps a new MacBook Air?

Wonder how its gonna work, Do you dial the number from mac... etc.
No explanation.
Does this mean i can Facetime my father which lives in Canada (He has a Mac i have an iPhone 4) Do i get charged "Long distance" etc etc...grrEDM

Has anyone tried downloading the beta yet? I just did and my downloading window says it's an iLife '09 Trial!! I've tried about 4 times. I wonder if their website is messed up or if it is bundled with iLife '09

This is great news!! Now when i'm overseas I can see and talk to my daughter from my phone!
Looking forward to a windows version so I can talk to my parents and family as well.
PS: Mac vs. PC debates are stupid, calm down.

I downloaded it and it is simple. You start and it has you login with your apple ID and then asks you what email you want to associate with FaceTime, for people calling you when you're on the Mac. It has contacts from your address book in the right-hand pane. You just select who you want to call and if they have an iPhone 4, you choose their phone number, if they have an iPod Touch you choose the email associated with their FaceTime.

Also, did Microsoft care to keep mac users updated with internet explorer? no they ditched it back with 4 or 5 (not that I care other than sometimes websites are stupid and require IE, which a simple spoof fixes). Doesn't seem to work with MiTime and iPhone 4 with 4.1. Tried to initiate call from Mac and iPhone.
Doesn't seem to work with any jb iPhone users, AT&T or T-Mo. I don't know anyone who isn't jb ;-)

Well, I myself am primarily a Windows user (work & home environment) being an IT Specialist. But I'm going to buy an iMac as I want to be able to harnis both Mac OSX & Windows on the same station. Therefore I opted to buy an iMac soon.
But I believe that what you say has allot of truth to it.
Die hard windows users will NEVER switch to a Mac. But then again I can bet money that they ALL have iPhones & iPods and most probably a iPad too

Why settle for less if you can have sooo much more!!!

I downloaded facetime and was able to launch the app - but i'm stuck at the signing in stage - it does not sign in with my apple ID - don't know why though !!!!

I need help too. I downloaded it but it says my camera isn't compatible. I'm on a unibody macbook! Anyone else having this problem?
