Hulu Plus Coming to Roku, Can Apple TV Be Far Behind
Roku, creator of the original Netflix streaming box, today announced that Hulu Plus would be coming to the device this fall. The Hulu Plus channel will be available to all Roku devices for the usual $9.99/Month subscription price. With Hulu Plus, users will have access to full TV seasons from the hundreds of shows available through the service.
“We are excited to bring Hulu Plus to all Roku users,” said Pete Distad, VP of Content Distribution for Hulu. “With Hulu Plus on Roku, TV fans will have an easy way to stream to their TVs the shows they love, whenever they want.”
With Hulu Plus being added to more devices on a regular basis, it should be only a matter of time until Hulu comes to Apple TV. Every device running at least iOS 3.2 is currently compatible with Hulu plus, and Apple TV is just another iOS device under the hood.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has hinted that an Apple TV App store would be made available when the time was right. With strong competition from the likes of Google, Boxee and Roku, Apple needs to set itself apart from the pact, if it hopes to come out on top. Opening an Apple TV App Store before the holiday shopping season starts would be a great way to do this.
Roku recently updated its line of HD streaming players and now are competitively priced with Apple TV. Apple does have the edge, however, when it comes to slick interface design. Will this be enough? We’ll just have to wait and see. This should be an interesting year for set-top media boxes. The competition has never looked so good.
