Rumor: AppleTV Will Run iOS? iProd 2,1 Possibly AppleTV 2,1

The folks over at TUAW received a tip from a developer who found a similarity between the once rumored iProd2,1, which was believed to be a new iPad device, and the new AppleTV's configuration descriptor, AppleTV2,1, while looking through the USB device configuration list in the iOS 4.2 Beta 1. If this is indeed the iProd 2,1 it could possibly be running an iOS variant or the actual iOS itself. However, this being a rumor, or more of a speculation, the iProd2,2 could be an iPad after all, but for now we will run with this concept.
During the presentation that Jobs gave, it appeared as though the AppleTV was not running an iOS based firmware, as there was no apparent SpringBoard or Icons of such. Nonetheless, if this does indeed indicate that the AppleTV is based on iOS, then it could mean even more opportunities in the Jailbreak world, such as running Apps both official and unofficial.
Keep in mind that the AppleTV will probably not have much room for storage, as it's intended purpose is for streaming your content from another device, so if we do manage to get our AppleTV's jailbroken, there won't be too much room to play around. Either way, we will found out later this month, as it is expected to ship late September.
What would you want to do on a jailbroken AppleTV?Last edited by Nick Hesson; 09-17-2010 at 12:29 AM.

Jailbroken appletv would be cool if you could stream from a site like casttv or something so you could watch without paying a buck to rent it. Also to be able to jailbreak it would be nice just to say to apple that they can't lock us into what they want only.

I'm confused as to why people feel the need to buy this box of crap... you can achieve so much more with a crappy 10 year old computer and some converter cables. a netbook would even be better than that thing. If all you want is to play movies and TV, there's no point in paying for something that is locked down.

now that the boxee box is coming... I have near-0 interest in the apple TV. The ONLY advantage it has over the Roku players is the ability to stream from other iOS devices. Otherwise even the Roku has more "apps" to stream from... for free.
Really?

I've been wanting an Apple Tv for awhile now, and with the new price tag I'll be getting one latter this month! I'm a fanboy and love it just because it's Apple and their products are beautiful, and no one can say different. I mean we all do have iPhones right...we all didn't buy our iPhones because the OS is better than anything we've ever seen, we complain with every iOS update as it is! We have them because they are the best looking phone, and because the resale value of them are ridiculous....I don't have an iPad yet because I want a USB port on the damn thing. If it gets one, I'll buy it same day...and because it's beautiful =)
Keeping with this topic, Yes, I want the Apple Tv to stream...but if I have the ability to JB an iOS in Apple Tv, I wouldn't have to worry about encoding all of my current movies to play on the damn thing, because as I know, someone would come up with a media player for the iOS that will play all media files as they are. No hour long encoding process' anymore!...perhaps "VLC"Do what you can when you can, Why Wait?

Will a potential buyer please tell me why they would purchase this iDevice? I see no point in buying it when there's some many a excellent alternatives. I think the most un-educated consumers (from a media player perspective) would be the only people buying this thing.

If you could jailbreak it and load Hulu+ and AirVideo or some kind of windows media server it would be perfect!

I have one on pre-order. For $100 why not? I want the convenient small size, and I will use the Netflix for sure. Why would I want an old PC, more cables, etc. Screw that. A simple little box will do it for me. If it can be jailbroken for more functionality, I say bring it on!

Of COURSE it runns iOS if GoogleTV runs Android/ChromeOS. Think about it: It expands the app market. This is why it's only $99... it's subsidized by the App Store.
