iHome Announces the First AirPlay Capable Speaker System

iHome, makers of the #1 selling iPod Speaker System in North America, have today announced the first AirPlay Capable speaker system. While pricing is still unannounced, the new device is expected to be released “this holiday season.” While detailed tech specs of the new system are still unannounced, we know that it will be a wireless device with a rechargeable battery capable of receiving AirPlay sources.
AirPlay Open to Third Parties.
AirPlay is the technology featured in iTunes 10 (and slated for the yet unreleased iOS 4.2 for iPad) that will allow users to wirelessly stream videos, music and photos to the new Apple TV and/or to AirPlay capable speakers or receivers. AirPlay replaces Apple’s previous audio-only streaming feature called AirTunes. While AirTunes only supported streaming to Apple’s own Airport Express, the new standard has been opened up to various vendors. In-fact Apple’s AirPlay website states: “AirPlay wireless technology will be fully integrated into speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems from companies such as Bowers & Wilkins and Denon”
Unlike the basic functionality of AirTunes, AirPlay will also stream associated information about the music playing including: song titles, artists, album names, and track durations.

I love the idea of airplay, but I'd like to see some adapters (supporting RCA, optical, and/or digital coaxial; preferably the latter two) for existing home theater/stereo systems. Give me an adapter like that, with AC power (batteries are useless in for this scenario) and you've got me sold. Hell, I'll buy five of them. This battery powered nonsense iHome is peddling sounds like junk to me. I suppose it's cool for outdoor use... except that AirPlay is designed to stream media from an iTunes library and utilize the iPhone/iPod as a remote, simply mediating between the speaker and the computer. As such, the only practical use for this toy is rich folk who want to listen to music while lounging at their pools... assuming they have a WiFi repeater in place to get them that kind of range. On the other hand, a receiver from Denon with full AirPlay support (video & audio) that allows for 720p video through HDMI and uncompressed Apple Lossless audio... well that would be awesome! My 2 cents.

Actually looks really sleek too, sometimes their products don't always look that attractive.

It does look very modern and would match alot of living spaces, Im thinking though the price of this thing will be outrageous, I guess well see, its more of a convenient thing, id imagine more companies will be producing a cheaper style of these speakers.

Can something really be called the "first" if it doesn't even release for another couple of months?
Not too interested in Airplay in general. While it's annoying having to hook up my laptop to my TV to have video, it gives me the freedom to play anything I want on it - Slingplayer, YouTube, TVShack, Netflix, etc. Whereas the AirPlay thing is just for Apple content like iTunes, right?

Some of you don't understand what AirPlay is. It a three piece or two piece setup. The first piece is your computer (with your iTunes library). The second piece (optional) is your iDevice which acts as a remote... using the remote app from the AppStore. Piece number three is the speaker, home stereo receiver, AirPort Express connecting to one of the aforementioned devices.
AirPlay is AirTunes + video. That's it. The only other difference is that 3rd party manufacturers can make their own AirPort Express type hardware. They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.
