Macbook Air Appeals to...
...those of us that are not 15 with no funds (not being condescending here), and are world business travelers spending days at a time in airports or on the road. If you don't understand the point of the Air, you probably are not the target audience.
The prospect of lugging around a 6 pnd 17" MBP doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, and to be honest, neither does my 5 pnd MacBook. It's just too heavy when taking into account other things I need for carry on and don't want to put in checked luggage.
Business professionals need a lightweight machine they can use for word processing, email, web browsing, maybe vid watching, and in my case the ability to run various network admin-ing apps like RDP, SSH, direct serial connection, etc. that are just not good experiences on an iPhone or iPad.
So while the price is high, people like myself are more than willing to pay a premium for the convenience and use it as a tax write off. Performance doesn't always come in the form of a fast processor or HD...

An insane computer model for insane people.
I personally want my laptop to feel, well, like a laptop and not a toy. And surely not something that if I drop, isn't going to shatter into a million pieces. Idc if it really won't, I don't want to find out.
I can't get a new mac because I just hate how everything has to be thin. I want a super laptop, not a thin laptop.

If this existed earlier I would have bought it because it would have been the only non-netbook which fits in my motorcycle tank bag. The M11x may be thicker, but I'm a gamer and am much happier. That said, it BARELY fits and an 11.6" MBA would surely fit better (less boarder around the screen, I'm sure).

I've always been a fan of the MacBook air but cannot justify paying so much for one. They should leave the size alone, and work on dropping the price.

A Mini MBA appeals to me much more than an iPad. Even if it is going to be a bit pricey, will beat the sh!t out of any other netbook :P
