Default "Freedom from Porn:" Steve Jobs in Email Battle

Steve Jobs has been a lot more active lately in responding to emails sent to his [email protected] address. While many are simple 'yes' or 'no' answers to questions and some seem to have been written by marketing executives or other underlings, occasionally Steve gets into it, with longer messages that show his typical sharp style. Friday night's interchange with Valleywag blogger Ryan Tate is definitely an example of the latter kind.

Tate wrote that he got "ticked off" after watching an Apple commercial that called the iPad a "revolution." While drinking a cocktail, Tate shot off a short email to the Apple founder and CEO, asking if he thought if Bob Dylan at age 20 would have thought the iPad had anything to do with revolution. He probably expected nothing would come of it; in fact, as he writes, "I didn't plan to pick a fight with Steve Jobs last night. It just sort of happened."

Well, here's what happened: Steve Jobs fired back a response, saying that the iPad was about "freedom:" freedom from programs that "steal private data" and drain batteries… and yes, from porn. Tate replied that his MacBook battery did fine with Flash, and accused Jobs of irrationally being against Flash, calling custom-built Cocoa (which he kept referring to as "Coca") media "weak content in an approved wrapper," and noted that he thought "porn was just fine." Jobs parried with a remark about how Tate sounded "bitter," and asserted that Apple was just trying to do right by its users, saying that 200,000 apps indicated that "something must be going alright." Tate responded with a complaint about the lack of intermediate APIs and "Apple's pet police literally kicking in my co-worker's doors," in a clear reference to the raid on Jason Chen's apartment. Valleywag and Gizmodo are both Gawker Media sites.

Anyway, you can follow the whole dialogue in Tate's post. Steve Jobs gets credit for directly engaging critics, for sure… even doing so past 2am on a weekend night. And his parting shot was pretty pithy: "Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?" Hey, Steve, tell us how you really feel.

Its good to see that He (Steve Jobs) is really active not only in reading his e-mails, but taking the time to duke it out with his opposition. I don't agree with him on all fronts, but I say that porn on the App Store would degrade, well further degrade, what its original intent was.

Hard to believe Jobs would even respond to such material. I'm sure he already gets enough about it. Why explain/argue with a complete stranger??? Unless however, he feels as though it's true that he's making a huge mistake about flash.

    Just my opinion

I agree with both sides of the argument, i feel that Apple has no right to decide what kind of content we (the people who dish out $500-$900 of our hard earned cash) decide to watch. But at the same time Apple has a strong reputation to keep, and they are fighting to keep are mobile devices as safe & clean as possible, but there is a line between doing the right thing & being control freaks.

if it's their safety and cleanliness they are trying to protect its as simple as this; download or don't download, and also don't forget the parental restrictions that can be brought upon any iDevice via the setting(which is basically the iPhone iPad and iPod touch). they all have ways to block children from downloading music/apps spanning from explicit material to nothing at all, as well as what can be synced to through iTunes. so apple can't fight that verbal battle because their in-device settings would shoot any statement they can come up with out of the water, lol they'd simply contradict them selves with their own creations.
damn drug dealers, and there jailbroken iPhones... ____ Hit the thanks if you think i suck

Some how thing brings back memory of when news about how Walmart banned Maxim, FHM, and Stuff magazine.

Jobs can easily say if you dont like it, go find yourself something else. At the same time, this isn't like if you dont like a Lenovo, you can go buy yourself a Dell.

I'm glad I can still walk into Wal-Mart and purchase porn... oh wait.

it's ridiculous how people can't wrap their minds around the idea of a company deciding which content it wants to deliver on it's platform.

Steve isn't going on a crusade to ban porn as a whole, it just won't be served in the AppStore, if you want porn, you click that little icon that says Safari, and find your porn the old fashioned way.

Actually, its EXACTLY like that. You can absolutely g out and buy yourself a SONY, HP, or whatever.. The truth is however, we DO like it! and are willing to accept whatever stumping restrictions laid upon us (just as long as there is a jailbreak-way around it, for some of us at least).

That is way too funny and true. Delivery of such content has gotten pretty mobile friendly as of recent, so theres really no need for it to be at the appstore thus the name "AppStore" not exotic store. Imagine a mass of crap to wade thru just to wade thru another mass to find that one app.
Just think of this imagine how many p0rn gateways there are on the net.. now imagine that on the appstore......

Yeah because using the search feature in the app store is SO hard

I don't really care if there is pron type applications in the app store or not. Just thought your statement was a bit over the top.

You're acting like dozens of fart apps and apps that make gunshot noises when you press a button just because kids who are into the "thug" culture think it's sw33t br0 don't already degrade the overall quality of the App Store. It's a gigantic LOOK AT ME! contest and there's only a handful of Apps (at best) that are actually worth having and will get used more than twice a month.

If people really need porn on the iPad they can go and download "Airvideo" app. Watch porn videos or any videos directly from the computer to your iDevice.

well that's not exactly correct tho is it ? have you actually tried out what you have posted. it's true that it does block downloading content , but kids can still see lots and lots of porn apps with these settings enabled. Considering that lots of women complained out the porn + that it is unsuitable for all children, that's easily more than half the people that don't want it. if wanking is such a major part of your life that you need a dedicated app then android will more than suit your needs.
