Default Steve Jobs Blasts Adobe Flash on Apple Website

From the looks of it, Steve Jobs just wanted to make known his true feelings about Adobe Flash - just in case we haven't been able to accurately deduce from a multitude of blatant indicators elsewhere that Apple simply doesn't like Flash and wants no part of it. Just to clear up any confusion, Steve Jobs published what some are now calling an anti-Flash manifesto directly to the Apple website.

Communicating in his own words with no comments "taken out of context," Steve Jobs let loose in his letter with a resounding rejection of Adobe, ostensibly designating Flash as a relic of the past that was fit for PCs but antiquated and impractical in the era of mobile devices. Consequently, Jobs was forced to concede that Apple and Adobe have "grown apart" with the two mega brands now sharing "few joint interests."

While Steve Jobs utilized no shortage of examples in today's letter to argue that Adobe is basically a thing of the past, perhaps the most biting argument made by Jobs is that Flash isn't needed to fully enjoy Apple devices, which have rendered Flash "no longer necessary." In essence, Jobs served up his greatest hits, pointing out that Flash is a closed system and that "sub-standard apps" would result from converting Flash applications to the iPhone.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.
While we can almost envision the folks at Adobe firing back likely even before the start of the weekend, Steve Jobs has clearly delineated his argument against Flash, leaving nothing to the imagination with regard to his company's ongoing exodus from all things Adobe. And once he finished explaining why Apple is effectively out of the Flash game, he made a point to rib Adobe one last time and suggest how they should retool their own business strategy.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Sounds like Adobe Flash is done; at least in Apple's view.

Hah Steve Jobs.. You are a very pathetic person. Almost 99.9% of the web HAS flash. You can't expect them to just adopt to this stupid HTML5..

It's funny if you read the whole article on apples website that jobs specifically mentions:

"Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?"

Hahahahh like iPhone users didn't have to wait for mms, tethering, horizontal sms... ect. Real basic stuff... I am sure if you did a side by side comparison on your users having to hold their breath... we would all be iDead

I'm curious.. as I've never used a mobile phone with flash... how does it solve the issue of controlling the video content as far as playback and pause and stuff?

Let the technology speak and the people decide, Steve.

Android 2.2 will have full flash integration. If it does it well, you will have some explaining to do.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Adobe countered by announcing a 2-year plan to phase out all support for the Mac platform? No Photoshop on OSX = real kiss of death.

I really think that if the new iphone does not meet our demands the iphone will fade. Other mobile platforms are stepping up giving us what we want like the htc hd2. I on the other hand am done with apple 3 years for video four for multitask,it just seems like we are getting played by them.

I do agree that Apple wants to provide a good user experience on their device which double the battery life definitely fits into. If the iPad used flash instead and only got 5 hours of video playback you'd have the masses complaining about battery life and Apple pointing the finger at Adobe.

Ummm,...actually HTML5 is already moving in elsewhere as well. Facebook is already adopting HTML5.

Ouch...saw that coming a mile away.
Wonder how this would swing if Adobe decided to stop producing it's Creative Suite for OS X?
That would be quite the showdown.

EDIT: Adrian beat me to it.

Yes, adobe is going to consider closing off over 40% of their revenue to get back at apple. Unlike Apple that gets by just fine without flash, adobe needs apple. Closing that door would be suicide for them.

Also, I agree with pretty much everything Jobs wrote. People who still want flash for some reason are delusional. I hineslty can't wait for droid to get flash (god knows when) just so people see how bad it is.

I saw that on the apple website before there was an article here, so I thought maybe it was old news, but I guess not. I am sick and tired of Apple telling me what I can and can't do with my iphone. Almost every website I want to go to has flash. My own website would have flash if I could get to it from my iphone or future ipad. I have the Adobe CS4 Master Collection and I love it!! If apple reads this, I had planned on getting an iPad 3g when it goes on sale tomorrow, as well as the rumored Mac Pro with the i7-980x six core processor if it ever came to be, but the thought of no flash on the iPad, and possibly no future Adobe creative suite on the Mac, I have decided not to purchase either. My production company will have new computers for HD rendering by December, and the ball is in Apple's court whether we get Mac Pros and iPads, or go with a PC solution. Once again another bad move by Apple.

"flash is a thing of the past". Riiiiight. That's why 99% of the internet uses flash lol. If it was a thing of the past it wouldn't be that popular.
