Default Apple Readying Second Software Fix for 27-inch iMac

AppleInsider reports on a post from Apple's support forums that indicates that the company is getting ready to make a second stab at correcting ongoing display issues with its recently introduced 27-inch iMac. The firmware update released last month resolved the issue for some users, but reportedly problems persist.

An iMac owner named Dennis Murphy was told that Apple support technicians had been issued a bulletin on Saturday that said a new firmware update was being readied for release in about three weeks.

I just called AppleCare, and apparently, a bulletin was issued today (he said it's dated 1/23/10) to the support staff about continued flickering with the 27" iMac, even after the "27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0" has been applied.

From what the AppleCare technician told me, Apple is aware of the issue and anticipates a fix in about 3 weeks. This would clearly explain the extended shipping times we're seeing.
Apple support techs have reportedly been instructed to collect the contact information for users that complain of display problems so that they can be notified when the firmware update is released.

Last week, the online Apple Store changed the availability for 27-inch iMacs from a few days to - coincidentally - three weeks. AppleInsider contacted the company today to ask about the matter, but were told that the delay had to do with supply, not a service problem.

...when contacted by AppleInsider Monday, an Apple representative said the three-week delay was not related to any hardware issues. Instead, they said the company has had trouble meeting up with demand for the new system, as some components are in limited availability.
Apple has remained silent about the widely-reported display issues, going so far as to apologize publicly about only the shipping delays.

Part of me giggles each time Mac aficionados complain about how PCs have such a bad time with drivers. Then something like this happens and completely reaffirms that Apple is all about the Kool-Aid®.

Apple can't even get drivers correct for a single configuration?

All aboard the Apple /failtrain v2!

I just have a simple MacBook early 2008 4,1 Black. It has served me well. The only thing I don't like about it is the graphics card! Intel GMA x3100 I think the CPU is doing everything and all the GPU is doing is turning what the CPU says into colours and putting it on the screen. ATI would be nice.
