stupid or not, the scary point to me is the fact that 1, freedom of speech seems to be forgotten in the USA.... Due Process seems to be forgotten as well... Yes it wasn't the most intelligent thing to do but.. if they care to maybe investigate further they probably find dumb *** had no means or even intelligent enough to follow throw with such a threat.

At this point whats stopping say a group of people that maybe want to remove a co-worker casue he or she is strange from posting a threat on a computer and pointing the finger and the person they want removed. given this "post 9/11 era" this situation could be easily carried out...
before 9/11 innocent until proven guilty...post 9/11 guilty until proven otherwise. and people worry about govenrment run healthcare turning the US into a socialist state...pffffff

And about freedom of speech... Panic is what people make out of it... yelling fire in a movie theater is one thing.... yelling the sky is falling is something yet again... a posted note on a computer screen is only inciteful if someone yells OMG a bomb!!!! should that person be arrested as well???? its called discretion and it seems to be lost in the post 9/11 age and more often then not the lack there of more offensive then the original act. Freedom of speech is just that. how people act is the due process thats been lost

i agree... lack of popluation control created this kid. at the same time though, people make mistakes... give him a spanking and ground him for a few months... i don't see a point in sending a kid to jail for something like that... im sure he was just trying to be "funny" and FAILED...

    Default Bonehead
While threatening people with potential terrorist activities is indeed a crminal offense,
think about this. What if that was your child? OK, he made a bad judgement.
But his intentions were not to cause harm.
He's a 17 year old boy on testosterone overload!
I believe probation and community service for 100 hours would be plenty of punishment.

Let me show you two a correct form of freedom of speech which I am invoking here and now.

My personal opinion is that you two are pretty dense individuals. Threatening strangers without being threatened yourself by that person is never a FUNNY thing to do no matter how you want to try and spin it.

It is funny to me to see all of the people on this thread defending this kids actions. Let me ask you this and see what intelligent responses we get back. How do you, without knowing anything about this kid other than his age, determine that this was a prank and not a serious threat or cry for attention? How do any of you know his intentions or whether or not he is capable of pulling such an even off?

For the lack of answers of those 2 questions alone is why we have laws in place to protect us against any threat of this nature against innocent lives. We never know what someone is capable of and what it takes to push someone to the limit. We see normal people with families who go out and kill all of their co-workers because they were laid off. We see snipers who pick off innocent people driving on the interstate or pumping gas because they have no excitement in their lives. There was a teenager who flew a plain into a building here in downtown Tampa several years ago because he decided he was going to be a terrorist.

Bottom line is that not everyone is rational these days or has a proper thought process. We don't know enough about this 17 year old kid to know what his true intentions were. Even if they were intended to be just a prank, he needs to be punished so he can better understand the laws and the society we live in today. In this new age of terrorism we have to treat every threat as a serious one, no matter who it comes from. When I lived in Israel I used to witness first hand the after effects of suicide bombers. I had just finished eating lunch at a Sbarro's pizza in Jerusalem, got about a mile down the road and felt and heard a huge explosion. 15 people were killed and another 130 were wounded by a 22 year old suicide bomber. I have many stories just like this one, and if you talk to anyone from Israel they will all have similar stories or know of people killed by a suicide bomber. Until you have lived through such events, or even lived in places where terrorism is a threat which Americas is now, you would realize just how serious you have to take these threats.

I will leave you all to think about what history has shown us with bombings, shootings, and other terrorist attacks or just civilian outbursts. Most of the time we do not get the courtesy of a warning letter or signs of violence. But in the cases we do, we have to react. And if we don't react, you see what happens...9/11 and the Christmas Day attempted Plane Bombing are 2 prime examples in the USA where we received warning of such plots and didnt react or take them seriously.

I can not believe all the people here think freedom of speech implies freedom to say anything anywhere. How about I get in front of your house away and yell all kinds of offensive words to you and your family, then scream freedom of speech when you call the cops.
I can't believe you have failed at basic logic. You CAN yell fire in a theater, or yell bomb in an airport. You just have to suffer the consequences. Same with yelling offensive words, you will get punished with 'Disturbing the peace'. You obviously don't understand being held accountable for your actions. You say and do things that are illegal or offensive and you suffer the consequences. I am amazed you are so dense to think that you can't say what you want. Once you start limiting what people can and can't say, other freedoms get eroded.

Sorry, but as an Iraq war veteran, the war in Iraq has absolutely nothing to do with protecting any of our freedoms. Matter of fact, the Patriot Act was borne out of that ongoing war and has the exact opposite effect that you claim I and others before and after me are protecting. The Patriot Act has eroded the Bill of Rights completely. Iraq has ZERO to do with defending anything to do with our freedoms, it has everything to do with spreading the Empire that is the US Government. Guys like me were fooled into thinking we needed to go after terrorists.

First and foremost, thank you for ur service to this country. However, I respectfully disagree with the entirety of ur post. As a vet myself (4yrs combat control, 3 yrs MP) imho, the Patriot act was an absolute necessity, as is the war in Iraq and Afganistan.

I'm not saying that we didnt create this mess, we should have finished the job the first time we were in the middle east, and we should have allowed the CIA to sanction osamma as soon as the ruskies left afganistan. That being said, when the enemy doesnt play by any set of rules, and the rules we have in place restrict our men and women in uniform (military or civilian) from doing what needs to be done, I have a problem with that. The Partiot Act sent a clear message to potential terrorists, don't come to our country and expect to be protectd by the rules and laws that REAL citizens of this great country are afforded.

Let me be clear, I am not tryiing to start a fight here, I'm just voicing my OPINION. I have the utmost respect for yours, you sir have earned it, as have all others who volunteered to defend this country!!!!!

Here is a fun fact, 90% of muslims are innocent law abiding citizens, but 100% of terrorists are muslims.
