Apple's Leaving The U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Image via US Chamber of Commerce
More closely resembling a soap opera than a leading provider of cutting edge electronics and technologies, Apple is once again making headlines this week for every reason other than its product line.
This evening, the Washington Post broke the story that Apple is pulling out of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over climate control issues.
In recent months, the U.S. Chamber of commerce has been a vocal critic of the burgeoning plans by the US to reduce U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions. Apple - which for a few weeks now has been on a "green" public relations campaign - finds itself at odds with the Chamber over this particular issue. As a result, Apple is bailing.
It's another bizarre morsel of news inspired by the computer giant this week. From battling it out in court with Eminem's music publisher to directing every lawyer on staff to destroy the logo-stealing evil-doers from Woolworths, Apple is all over the map with its focus. It's no wonder we're still waiting for the new upgraded products that have been teased and hinted at for what now seems like an eternity. In a letter to the Chamber's president, Apple Vice President Catherine Novelli wrote, "Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort." As a result, Novelli said, "we have decided to resign our membership effective immediately."
Although Apple will likely be lauded by some for taking an environmental stand, others (certainly the more cynical among us) will surely wonder what's behind this sudden and aggressive green push by Apple. Positive PR, perhaps?Apple's decision makes it the fourth major company in several weeks to pull out because of the Chamber's climate policy, said Pete Altman, a Natural Resources Defense Council activist. The others have been the power companies Pacific Gas and Electric, PNM Resources, and Exelon.
If so, here's a suggestion. If the good folks at Apple want some really good PR, they should get cracking in the iMac, MacBook, and Mac mini upgrades that should be inspiring all the headlines for Apple these days.

Why is apple being run by a bunch of idiots? First they sue the food company and now this. WTF does this god damn ******** have to do with making computers and technology? They have completely lost focus. "We wanna separate from the US Chamber of Commence because they aren't GREEN enough" gimme a ****** break.

Smart move. Probably a good excuse to save some money by not being a member of the Chamber.

There have been several big companies that left the Chamber of Commerce because of the objective views on environment. I like that Apple is doing this. They are taking a stand on showing that they do not like that the Chamber is against lowering emmisions.

the US ! and give a **** on the earth, nature and future !
This sounds like posts from George W. Bush.
So you must learn responsibility too for you and your childs !
So this is the right step from apple of beeing a future orientated modern global player.

@Jahooba
Your message just shows, you look to much into the past. Nobody relevant denies the historical fact you bring up (again). Nobody relevant wants to repeat this...
But this is not about history. This is about NOW and this is about our future.
Apple stands its environmental ground in a changing world, after they have been attacked by Greenpeace several times. Apple changed its course, realizing that the worst thing to do would be nothing.
WE ALL have to face the fact , that we all have to do something about climate change NOW! Before it is to late. And the time we have is running through our hands the longer we just talk.
Pulling out of chamber of commerce because of this might be odd. BUT it gives Apple good headlines in Europe ... and maybe in the US as well
UUuuuh and by the way... Just because Bluemetal comes from Germany doesn't proof he/she is NO jew. Just judging from the nick, it could be ...Last edited by farpoint; 10-06-2009 at 08:52 AM.

I was responding to the unprovoked Bush-bash.
I don't care what Apple does or doesn't do about greenhouse gasses. In fact, I'm all for the Earth getting warmer. Most of the life on this planet benefits from CO2 and/or a warmer climate, and I look forward to the day when plants have once again become the dominant form of life.

Good for Apple on this one! Apple takes its environmental footprint seriously and has been working very hard to reduce it for years. This is nothing new for Apple and they are focusing to keep this policy in check.
Personally, I think it is very bad form on the Chambers part to try and force bad environmental policy onto its members... this will come back and bite them where it hurts!

It looks like the Environmental Wacko's infiltrated Apple too. I'm all for a clean and healthy planet Earth but this whole Global Warming ploy is one big scam just like Y2K! If you open your mind and look outside of the main stream liberal media you will find all the facts you need about this. Go to GlobalWarmingHoax.com and see for yourself!

Dear apple, you sell electronics. That's what you do. You are not politicians, you are not a global force to be reckoned with, you are not a country nor world all your own though your mind is clearly in one. Get back to making phones and computers and writing programs, leave the politics to the politicians.
