Plastic Macbook Here to Stay After Refresh
The beloved polycarbonate Macbook is in line for a refresh of design to make it slimmer and lighter along with an update to the internals as well reports AppleInsider. This comes shortly after the addition of the 13" Aluminum unibody Macbook Pro released in June.
Since the release of the 13" Macbook Pro the entry level 13" Plastic Macbook has looked oddly out of place next to sexy aluminum siblings leading to questions about it's possible future with many wondering if it is going keep being produced.
Apple intends to keep the Macbook as a sub $1000 entry level laptop after refreshing it to be more 2010 and less 2006 (the last time it had a visual update). The 13" plastic Macbook has worked its way to the #2 seller of all Apple computers behind the iMac recently most likely due to the good performance (Apple has silently upgraded it not once but twice) for less money.
Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes believes that Apple will inroduce multiple models at multiple price points after the refresh
via appleinsiderWe [...] believe the MacBook line needs to be revamped (there is only one MacBook available now, an old white model) and that we could see a lower priced line soon, positioned below the new MacBook Pro models,

On what basis? I am typing this on a macbook. They fill a niche in the market, for people who want to access to OS X and the various perks a mac provides, but do not have deep pockets. They may be more expensive than other hardware-equivalent laptops on the market, but that is understandable.
Why would ANYONE want the macbook killed, except Apple's competitors?

On the basis that the entry level MBP is around the same cost as the entry level MB less than a year ago. When Apple released the unibody MB last year it was a step in the right direction. But they have since wiped it out for no apparent reason and replaced it with the MBP for the same price. Like I said, complete redesign is in order or just kill it off....and I am speaking of the body of the MB here and nothing else. It just doesnt fit in with the Mac family anymore
