OpenCL 1.0 Ready in Time for Snow Leopard

Today the Khronos Group announced the release of the OpenCL 1.0. The software is described as “the first open, royalty-free standard for cross-platform, parallel programming of modern processors found in personal computers, servers and handheld/embedded devices.”

This means that OpenCL is ready in time to be used with Snow Leopard. If the software is used with the next OS this would allow developers and programmers the ability to dramatically speed up all sorts of applications. This is done by making the most of the untapped GPU processors and multi-core processors found in the latest and greatest computers. Apple originally proposed that OpenCL would be used in Snow Leopard and many think this helped speed up the adoption of the specification. OpenCL has also already been ratified by NVIDIA, ARM, Intel and many others.

Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, says;

“We are excited about the industry-wide support for OpenCL, Apple developed OpenCL so that any application in Snow Leopard, the next major version of Mac OS X, can harness an amazing amount of computing power previously available only to graphics applications.”

To the average user this means faster software performance all around. Snow Leopard is scheduled to be released in 2009 and recent rumors point to its release in the first quarter.
